NEW RESOURCES
ProPublica:

Stuff New Zealand:
A decade of Kiwi journalism preserved from Newshub.co.nz. “When it was announced earlier this year that the Newshub team and its corresponding newshub.co.nz website would close, Stuff agreed a process to migrate all available Newshub-owned content to its site to preserve the archive, allowing instant public access to the searchable content and ensuring the work was not lost. Months later, that process is now complete, with more than 175,000 articles, 36,000 videos and 4400 photos dating back to 2014 saved, says Stuff Owner and Publisher Sinead Boucher.”
TWEAKS AND UPDATES
Earthdata:
New Features Added to the Earth System Data Explorer. “The second version of the Earth System Data Explorer data visualization tool uses Google Earth Engine and adds new resources for data exploration.”
AROUND THE SEARCH AND SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD
Raymond Camden:
Using Transformers.js for AI in the Browser. “Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending, and speaking at, connect.tech. One of the cooler presentations I saw was from Danielle Maxwell where she discussed using AI in the browser and introduced me to Transformers.js. I’d heard of this before, but wasn’t quite aware of how easy it was to use. While this isn’t necessarily going to replace a ‘real’ GenAI server, it does feel compelling enough to something to consider. As my readers know, I’ve been playing with Chrome’s attempt to bake this in as well, and while that’s not quite ready for real use yet, Transformers.js feels like something you could play with right now.”
News 18 (India):
Another Google Maps Goof-Up, 3 Injured As Car Follows Wrong Directions Into Canal . “Divyanshu, a resident of Kanpur district, was travelling with two friends to attend a wedding in Pilibhit district. Relying on Google Maps for navigation, Divyanshu was driving when the app directed them towards the canal track near Kalapura village. Unfortunately, the bridge over the canal was broken, causing Divyanshu to lose control of the vehicle, which plunged approximately 15 feet into the canal bed.”
DJ Magazine:
Kickstarter to make Tony Wilson Archive public launched. “The archives of late Manchester dance music scene icon Tony Wilson are the focus of a new fundraising campaign. The Tony Wilson Archive (TWA) and Manchester design studio DR.ME have launched a Kickstarter to share the art, memorabilia and music of The Haçienda and Factory Records cofounder with the public.”
SECURITY & LEGAL
CapRadio:
California lawmakers again introduce new bills to regulate social media. “Assembly Bill 2 by Assembly member Josh Lowenthal of Long Beach would make social platforms liable would make social platforms liable for the harm they may cause to minors through civil penalties. Assembly member Rebecca Bauer-Kahan of San Ramon also introduced Assembly Bill 56 to require warning labels for social media, a policy the U.S. Surgeon General advocated for earlier this year.”
Route Fifty:
States’ privacy is a ‘continual conversation’ amid AI growth, officials say. “States and cities have all begun their journeys towards data privacy regulations for different reasons, but now all face the prospect of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies accelerating, or even upending, progress they have made. Speakers at this week’s Innovation Spotlight hosted by Route Fifty and GovExecTV highlighted those differing origin stories.”

GitHub’s boast that Copilot produces high-quality code challenged. “GitHub’s claim that the quality of programming code written with its Copilot AI model is ‘significantly more functional, readable, reliable, maintainable, and concise,’ has been challenged by software developer Dan Cîmpianu. Cîmpianu, based in Romania, published a blog post in which he assails the statistical rigor of GitHub’s Copilot code quality data.” Good afternoon, Internet…
