Datasheets for Web Archives Toolkit is now live. “This Toolkit provides information on the creation of datasheets for web archives datasets. The datasheet concept is based on past work from Gebru et al. at Microsoft Research. The datasheet template and samples here were developed through a series of workshops with web archives curators, information professionals, and researchers during Spring and Summer 2023. The toolkit is composed of several parts including templates, examples, and guidance documents.”

The AIDS Quilt: Digitized at the Library. “As the largest communal art project in the world, the AIDS Memorial Quilt honors the lives of all Americans who have died of AIDS since 1981, when the disease was first identified. Released to coincide with World AIDS Day (Dec. 1) commemorations, the newly digitized collection offers a unique window into the deeply personal stories behind the 55-ton quilt and its panels. The digitized collection, totaling more than 125,000 items, includes letters, diaries, photographs and other materials documenting the lives of those represented in the Quilt.”

FTC changes its telemarketing rules to cover growing ‘tech support scam’ calls. “The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has finalized amendments to its Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR), making it easier to protect consumers who are tricked into paying scam tech support companies. The FTC could already go after these fraudster companies if they initiated calls to people - now, they can do the same thing if people call the scammers too.”

Star power eclipses science in obesity discussions on social media. “In a recent study published in the International Journal of Obesity, researchers explored the reactions of X (formerly ‘Twitter’) users to obesity- and weight loss-associated tweets (n = 8,989, collected between December 3 and December 11, 2022) from celebrities, politicians, and medical authorities (specialists, journals, and health institutions). They conducted descriptive statistics, sentiment analysis, and multivariable quantile regression modeling and found that tweets posted by celebrities, medical journals, politicians, and universities received predominantly positive feedback.”
