When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people
to gather and sing their old, known songs, a decent respect to the
community of musicians requires that they should declare their
intention and specify the date and time of their meeting.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that it enlarges the heart to
sing with one another, that all are invited to sing, that those who
are unable to carry a tune are Invited nonetheless.
When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the
same Object evinces a design to reduce the People under absolute
Silence, yea, to reduce them to mere Consumers of Music, it is their
right, it is their duty, to throw off such limitations and
oppressions.
We, therefore, the organizers of folk singing, appealing to the
Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in
the Name, and by the Authority of the good Singers of Bloomington,
solemnly publish and declare,
That we will sing together on the Fifth Day of September of the year A.D. 2009,
That the time of the Singing shall be 8:00 in the evening,
That the place ordained for meeting is the home of the honorable Sara
_. _____, who has provided directions below,
And that those who are blessed with a copy of Rise Up Singing, or a
guitar, should bring it.
And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the
protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our
Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.
