[ The man who appears on the screen is approximately in his mid-twenties. His expression is carefully neutral, and he seems to have taken the time to find somewhere to sit down before turning the camera on. When he speaks, it's in a voice that suggests he's used to recording messages for complete strangers.I get the sense that this is standard ( Read more... )

I don't think we're located on any starchart.

I didn't want to assume since it's almost impossible to tell from the ground, during the middle of the day, without a chart to actually compare to.

Mostly I say that because from what I understand we're technically not located in the universe.

For the sake of clarification, is that the known universe or just any universe I care to think of?

Safely, I think you can say the known universe.

Well. That goes to show my norm-space class back home was about as useful as I always thought it was.

Norm space?

Rather than wormhole travel?

Sorry, I may be at risk of jumping to an assumption again. Do you have space flight where you come from?

Not really, no.

All right. Then the short version is that navigating a ship through a wormhole without blowing up ship and crew or getting horrifying lost forever takes a very different set of skills than just moving along from one point in a given solar system to the next. Ergo one class for jump space and one class for norm-space.

At least, where I'm from.

I don't think I want the long version.

Anyway, hello. I'm Kenny Potter.

No, you probably don't. It was a really dull class.

It's good to meet you, Kenny. I'm Greg -- [ a very minute pause as Gregor judges the danger of giving his actual name given that he is in some weird alternate dimension ] -- or. Gregor Vorbarra.

[He catches that pause and files it away]

Is Greg okay? Or do you prefer Gregor?

Greg is fine. Preferable, maybe, in the circumstances since I'm so far from home, as things turn out.

Fine, Greg.

Has anyone explained this to you?

We're in a world that is not my world and is probably not near my world, being outside the known universe. We've all got access to this comm network and at least some of you are from Earth.

That's as far as I've gotten.
