It was really hot outside last month, so I never got around to harvesting the elderberries. The yard guys came and cut down all the elderberry growth along the fence and that was that. There are a few little elderberry plants still growing, but they are not flowering so we won't have more berries until next year, I guess.
Elder plants are very invasive. But I think I might like to have some in a big planter, because the flowers are pretty and I would like to have berries. Maybe I will get a big cheap planter and take some cuttings.
I promised a picture of my giant eggplant bush, so here it is:
The SFG is 4 feet by 4 feet by six inches deep, which gives you an idea of how very freaking big this bush has become. Today I am going to cut it back... you can't see the thyme and chives and chard that are being shaded out.
Here's a closeup of those two eggplants:
You can see, on the leaves, that there is some damage from flea beetles, but it is minimal and does not seem to bother the plant. I sometimes see what might be aphids on the plant, too, but I also see spiders, ladybugs, and anoles- all predators. So the balance is apparently being kept, naturally.
Today those two eggplants will become baba ganoush.
