This was the first day of juicing at work. I have to say, it was much, MUCH harder than juicing at home.
I had finished all my juice (two bottles of cucumber, broccoli, kiwi, carrot, and grape) by 1:00 and still felt hungry (first time I have really felt hungry during this process). When I went to refill my water, I smelled someone's lunch that they had heated in the lounge microwave and had a wave of certainty that, if I saw them carrying whatever made that smell, even if it was a 99 cent frozen burrito, I would KILL them for it.
I still made it through the day. I think the lesson to be learned here is to have an extra bottle at work for back up in case that happens again. I don't think one extra serving will make that much difference to the experiment, but it stands to have a significant impact on curbing my homicidal, frozen burrito tendencies.
The afternoon was ROUGH. I felt really, really tired and unable to focus. I even dozed off at my desk a few times. Fortunately, my boss is super understanding and supportive. She is REALLY physically fit and athletic, so I think she recognizes this as a very positive change. Besides, it takes much less effort to prod me awake than it would to find and train someone to take over my job if I dropped dead, Starbucks cup and In and Out bag in hand. She's practical that way.
When I got home, I got Henry set up with milk and Wii games and promised him I would play bowling with him as soon as I finished "making dinner". I had no idea that would end up being 3 hours later.
I decided to make myself all the juice I'd need for breakfast and lunch the next day and then, since I was already washing and chopping, why not just make juice for the WHOLE day for me and Earl?
I made myself some carrot, sweet potato, apple, and ginger juice. One serving for dinner and one saved for next day's breakfast. It was a glorious color and very tasty. Ginger is my new favorite ingredient. I did not think Earl would like it at all, so I cleaned out the juicer and started on the next batch. All veggies; all the time!
I mixed tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, parsley, kale, and celery. It tasted really good, a lot like V-8 but without the (yummy) salt. I kept emptying the juicer and making more until I had filled my 16 oz. bottle and a half gallon jug. With the last batch, the spout got clogged. I didn't know, so when I dropped the plunger, carrot juice shot out the back of the juicer and all over the kitchen. At least it's a pretty color.
By the time I had cleaned the kitchen, taken apart the juicer, washed all the dishes and gotten the juicing station set up for the next session, it was 10:00. An hour past Henry's bed time. So, I played the bowling game I promised, quickly got him ready for bed, read five or six bedtime stories, and watched him fall asleep.
Then I gulped down the juice I had made for dinner hours before and went to bed myself.
I definitely need a better system because this is not how I want to spend all of my evenings. Even if it is only the next 11 of them...
Oh, and another interesting thing about juicing? The pulp and waste is phenomenal! So. Much. Refuse. Fortunately, I have a friend who gardens and is willing to take it all for composting. If you plan to try the juicing thing, you should make sure you have one of those.
