Are we there yet?

Sora found Kairi sitting on the wharf, her feet dangling over the water. Just like the old days. Her long, coppery-red hair was pulled back into a messy bun, although it looked like most of it had fallen out of place, and sat around her face, as per normal.

Kairi's smaller hand found Sora's almost as soon as he had sat down next to her. They exchanged silent, knowing glances, before returning their thoughts to something else.

"Nothing's changed..." Sora said, smirking to Kairi. "Has it?"

"It depends on what you mean by that," She replied, squeezing his hand gently.

Sora hesitated, looking down at their intertwined hands. When they had been younger, it had been the three of them, no emotions, hormones, darkness or anything to separate them. But, things had changed. They were growing up now, and things like this were bound to come between them.

Kairi couldn't help but notice. Frowning a little, she cupped Sora's chin and looked directly at him.

"Sora, I have to ask..." She began, but stopped. How was she going to word what was on her mind? "I can see you have... no, hmm..."

She continued to look at him while she racked her brain for an answer. No, not an answer. A question that she wanted an answer to.

"Sora." She released his hand and his chin, and looked out over the water. "Are we... are we moving forward?"

The two sat in silence for a moment, both looking out at the horizon. The sun was starting to set and it was casting a red-orange glow around the islands. Sora knew the answer, he just didn't know how to say it.

Or how to express it. Kairi got to her feet, and started to walk away. "Let me know when you know." She muttered, trying to hide her disappointment, but having no luck.

"Kairi-"

She was out of earshot. Scrambling to his feet quickly, Sora gave chase. He wanted to tell Kairi how he felt, what was on his mind, before she got the wrong impression of his intentions.

He reached her when she was climbing into her boat, ready to go back to the mainland for the night. She acknowledged his being there, then returned to what she had been doing.

"Kairi." Sora took her hands and held them firmly in his own. She looked directly into his eyes, waiting to hear the news that there was nothing, they weren't moving forward, that they probably never would.

But it never came. Tugging on her hands, Sora pulled Kairi close to him and grinned his usual cheesy grin. "If you can’t see that we’re moving forward, then you’re stupider than I thought.” Brushing Kairi’s hair out of her face, Sora leaned in and kissed her. It wasn’t a long, passion-filled kiss, but it was enough in Kairi’s eyes.

She smiled at him. “What do you mean? Did you think I was stupid?”
