The world is made of silver linings

Last saturday, my Uncle Rick died after complications from bypass surgery.  In an age where people do not die from this kind of thing, a congenital defect with his lungs that had gone undetected his entire life resulted in him being unable to recover from the operation.  Today, I joined the rest of my family in saying goodbye to him.

My uncle left behind his wife of 40 years, my Aunt Midori, three children, and five grandchildren.  He met my aunt in 9th grade algebra, and the two were married while attending Virginia Tech.   Before graduating they already had a child, my cousin Cindy, and by 1978 had two more, my cousins David and John.  But my uncle's impact on the world will not merely be that he left behind children, but the part he played in molding children of unbelievable character and love.

His death was unexpected, and his life far too short.   Three weeks ago he was playing with my son, speaking proudly of his own children, and beginning to enjoy the golden years of his life.   Today he is gone.   I cannot begin to imagine how my Aunt will come home to an empty house each night after forty years of sharing her life with my uncle.  But I can only hope that my wife and I will have forty years to share with one another, and that we can leave behind the kind of legacy my Uncle Rick has.

Love to all.
