Part V

Greta only managed to get a little bit of sleep after she managed to get KITTY back online and equipped with heavier artillery. Her mind was racing with worry and thoughts of what was going to happen to her, Gabe and the Necromancers.

And as soon as she managed to fall into sleep, she was met with the same dream as before.

Eventually, she just gave up and began to overload herself on coffee.

“Miss Greta, are you okay?”

“Not really, KITTY,” Greta said as she poured cream into her fourth cup. “I’m nervous. I might lose someone I just realized I love and my friends. Maybe even you.”

“Do not be nervous for me, Miss Greta,” KITTY said, rolling towards her and placing a cold metal hand on Greta’s. “I have lived only to serve you. If I were to go offline permanently in order to protect you, it would be my greatest honor.”

Greta smiled at her robot. “Thank you, KITTY. The honor has been all mine.”

She heard the door open and the footsteps of three Necromancers stepping out of it. Greta rose to look at them. They all wore belts with various pouches and vials attached to them and Amanda had a metal helmet perched on top of her head. “You ready to do this?”

Greta held up a hand as she downed the rest of cup. She took a few shallow breaths as she finished her last gulp, her eyes watering a bit. “Yeah, I’m ready now. Remind me to never do that again though.”

The drive to the Sanchez bunker felt longer than usual. The sun was high and Greta felt like turning on the boosters to speed the drive up. She left them off though and just drove in silence, looking over her shoulder to see Butch staring out the window of the backseat, Voltaire counting up his various pouches and powders and KITTY sitting quietly in the middle, waiting for someone to address her. Amanda just kept her eyes towards the road.

Finally, they arrived at Greta’s school. Even though her school was small, Greta had never seen it so empty before. She pulled into the parking lot and brought the car to a stop. “Okay,” she said, unbuckling her seatbelt. “The bunker should be in the field towards the northeast, if I remember right. There’s a gravel path going towards it. Everybody out.”

They all climbed out of the car and began heading towards the northeast path. The gravel crunched under their feet and wheels as they slowly walked down, following the signs towards the bunker as it winded into a grove of trees. Finally, they saw the bunker door, but it was guarded by two girls Greta recognized from her school. She assumed that they had been turned into robots as well. Quickly, they ducked into some trees, avoiding the looks from the two guards. “What are we going to do now,” Greta whispered.

“Leave it to me,” said Amanda, cracking her neck. “You might want to turn KITTY off for a bit though because I don’t know how this will affect her.”

Before Greta could say anything, KITTY shut herself off and fell slightly limp. Greta couldn’t help but smirk at how closely that robot could follow indirect orders. “Well, that takes care of that. It’s all yours, Amanda.”

Amanda cleared her throat and the rest of them covered her ears. Quickly, Amanda launched herself towards the two robots, screeching her siren call. Greta could still hear the piercing din of it even though her hearing was muffled. Soon, the guards twitched and fell over and Amanda closed her mouth. The three of them uncovered their ears and looked up towards a very satisfied Amanda. “Now THAT is a proper siren, William Beckett.”
