Awesome Things to Remember

Feb 22, 2008 19:35

I didn't do a hell of a lot over this reading week--I'm not sure I did much last reading week either--but there were a few mad, rad and exciting events that I must write about (less they have the same fate of the Layton "stinky" dream).

Tuesday

Mum and I hit up Newmarket to go shopping.  Our first stop was Chapters so that I might get my book for my Language Arts project.  I decided to create a unit plan around The BFG by Roald Dahl.  It was one of my favourite books as a kid, so I had no problem buying it for the project (though I was kind of hoping to be able to pick it up second hand).  I also needed to get a magazine for my media paper (due in a few days!) and I wanted to find something that catered to a small market and preferably something that I would find interesting.  I found a few magazines on art, which is rad because art is wicked (!) and I have to write a paper on art schools for another class!

Our next stop was the mall, where we wandered around mostly.  I did get the new Hellogoodbye CD <33333 and mum got a bunch of "skinny" shirts because she's losing weight!  There were three ridiculous manikins outside of the fitting room of one store.  They were hanging in a display (why, I'm not sure), but clearly they weren't designed to be suspended.  The end result was a set of manikins that sporting ridiculously huge ghetto booties.  Hilarious.

When we got home, I went and got my hair cut.  Essentially it looks the same, just a little shorter on the sides and really short above the back of my neck.  The hair dresser flicked it out though, and Mum had just helped me redye the red, so it looked pretty wicked.

Wednesday

Becky came over and I was so stoked to see her!

Xenos: Becky!! I am so happy to see you, that I totally just used two exclamation points there!

It's true (Dave).  If my trusty narrator was writing out our dialogue, there would have been exclamation marks all over the place.  We went up to my room and showed each other funny/interesting web-based things and spent some time just going through my old journals.

Becky: "I was woken up by crazy guinea pigs this morning."  Out of context, that's the best statement ever.

It was fun to reminisce about all our crazy high school adventures.  Thinking about it now makes me really sad that she moved away.

After that we tried to figure out where to have dinner.  We're not the most decisive pairing, but after a half an hour we decided which city we were going to have our romantic single's date in.  We dressed up in matching outfits, gussied up and worked out the details of our relationship as we got ready to leave.  We decided that it was our anniversary and that we had been dating for 6 years (since we met in grade nine).

We ended up at the Mandarin for dinner.  Six different people welcomed us and asked how we were.  It took all I had to keep myself from bursting into a fit of giggles.  We went to town on the buffet.  I have not eaten so much food in one sitting since...I can't remember when.  We both commented that we ate more meat in one meal than we'd get over several days in university.  It was really nice though.  When we got our drinks we toasted to our better third who couldn't make it.

Becky: To our better third, who had to be with "family."

Before leaving, we asked one of the servers to take our picture.  Becky's eyes were closed.  But don't worry!  Mum took some pictures of us when we got home.

At home we all watched the lunar eclipse.  It was both exciting AND cold!  Then we watched a movie with John (that no one really understood), and stayed up a little later watching weird reality shows and chatting.

Thursday

We were woken up well before the crack of noon because I had to drive Mum to her lasic eye appointment.  We parted ways at the gas station in Coppin's Corners and Mum and I went to Toronto.

We nearly didn't get a parking space, but fortunately we found someone going to her car who approached us and told us to follow her.  I thought it was delightful!

The lasic eye place was kind of strange.  Everyone seemed to be on drugs and most of the patients probably were.  It was so relaxed and, I don't know, eerie almost.  I got to hang around Mum while they put her in this prep room with a few other patients getting their vision corrected.  It was really dark in the room and they played ambient, relaxation music.  This, I willingly admit, makes sense as laser eye surgery is vair frightening, but it was so strange!  I got to meet the doctor who was going to be doing the surgery.  He seemed really peppy.  Then it was Mum's turn.  They froze her eyes and put a little booties and a hair net on her and led her to the operating room.  I got to sit outside by a window and watch the surgery.

It was gross and awesome.  It was different than watching it on t.v. because I knew those eyes.  My jaw was nearly on the counter as I watched.  I almost cried when Mum blinked after each eye was completed because it looked like she hurt.  I'm sure it was just because her eye was blinking out the excess water, but still.  After the surgery, she came out and said, "I can see your face!"  It was so nice.

Mum was so excited about being able to see that she kept peeping her eyes open on the ride home.  She had to wear sun glasses and was supposed to keep her eyes shut as much as possible, but she said she just couldn't help but try and see what she could read now.  The doctor says that her vision will clear up in two days and then after three months it will be perfect.  She is so happy!

Friday

Another early morning.  I drove John to school because Mum needed the car so I could drive her to her eye appointment.  The roads were really snowy and I, perhaps, did not have the best footwear on (slip-ons).  I was slipping and sliding all over the place as Mum and I walked into her appointment.

At 2:40, I picked John up from school.  I needed to thief some university brochures from the guidance office, so I parked in the parking lot and walked into the school.  Ah high school!  I got a nice waft of smell of woodchips and cookies and felt right at home!

Xenos: I'm surrounded by younger versions of my friends!
John: You look like you still go to school here...

We picked up some brochures and I did my best not to giggle at the boy wearing zebra striped pants (haha, awesome).

I haven't done much else today, so I'll cut the entry off here.  I need to start my essay or lesson plan (both due on Monday).  I was kind of hoping to go out tonight, though.  Oh well.
