Last week I made six lavabo towels and three purificators for church. They are part of the fair linen used during services. The lavabo towel is used when the priest washes his hands before communion. The purificator is used to wipe the rim of the chalice between sips during communion. I knew we were low on both of those things. It's not like they're cheap and it's easy for the church to just buy them. I found some heavyweight 100% cotton fabric at Walmart and bought that for the lavabo towels. I made 3/4" wide hems with mitered corners on the 11x17 inch towels and then embroidered a white cross on each one. For the purificators I bought a packet of three 15" 100% cotton men's handkerchiefs. I trimmed them to 14" and then hemmed them to 12" square, also with 3/4" hems. Then I embroidered a white cross on each of them. Because they aren't linen and don't have machine embroidery like the others at church, I figured they could be spares in case we ran out of the nice ones. I took them to church yesterday. I was totally unprepared for the reaction of the Altar Guild. The ladies loved them. They exclaimed. They hugged me. One of them wants me to teach a class.
