Something I did not know is that The North American Electric Reliability Corporation runs the nation's interlocking web of transmission lines and power lines.  (I give you my word.  I've never heard of this corporation.)  One of the things it does is to keep the frequency of the current as precise as possible.  Which keeps clocks running accurately.  In a year long experiment due to begin in mid-July, it is going to allow for more frequency variation than it does now without corrections.  "Is anyone using the grid to keep track of time?"  asked Joe McClelland, head of electric reliability for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.  "Let's see if anyone complains if we eliminate it."
