History:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Saiyuki_characters#Hakkaihttp://saiyuki.wikia.com/wiki/Cho_Hakkai Personality: Cho Hakkai is, superficially, a courteous young man who smiles effortlessly and can perform the almost inhuman feat of pacifying his rebellious companions with calming words and effortless grace. Because the group he travels with is made up of such conflicting and excitable personalities, Hakkai’s inherent patience and cheerful persona serves as the glue that keeps things together. Hakkai is painfully polite to strangers, offering encouraging words and reassuring gestures that are frequently rewarded with trust and he is always willing to lend a hand to those who need it. Hakkai’s true trust is very hard to gain and he never lets any close to his heart. The only ones that can ever claim to have gained it are Goku, Sanzo and Gojyo and because of it they are the only recipients of his unrelenting loyalty and care. Those who meet him find themselves confused as to how a man so educated and well mannered can possibly travel with such unruly men when the truth is that Hakkai is in a league all his own.
Underneath the dry wit and charm Cho Hakkai is a self-deprecating man whose past is always lurking beneath the skin, one deep cut away from bleeding freely and tainting everything he knows. He is cunning, able to use his smile to make it harder for others to guess his real emotions, and is also capable of immense cruelty and hate. This is best shown during the Chin Yisou ark where the son of the demon that killed Hakkai’s lover tries to drive him insane with grief. His methods include manipulating Hakkai’s attachment to his companions and trying to use the ‘gaps in his heart’ to force Hakkai to kill them. However the manipulation fails because, as Hakkai says, his heart is ‘too small for there to be any gaps’ and drives his hand into the mans chest to grab his heart, or in this case a possessed game piece, in the hopes of making his death as painful as possible. This is the cruelty Hakkai fears, the cruelty that is not a result of the demon held at bay by his power limiters but of the man that killed a thousand demons and innocents to avenge his lover and, in an ironic twist, was transfigured into a demon himself. His nature is startling close to that of the demons and while limiters may keep the physical evidence of it hidden, it can never erase what is, in essence, a large part of Hakkai himself. He may have buried Cho Gonou the day he was reborn as Cho Hakkai but it is evident, when his friends are in danger or when others play with his life, that Gonou is dead in name only and Hakkai is always a few steps and a push away from toppling over the cliff and falling into madness.
Strengths: Hakkai is able to manipulate chii, or spirit energy, either for offensive or defensive purposes. He can use it to form energy balls that cut down his enemies, mold it into a protective barrier or pour it into others to create healing energy that speeds up the bodies’ recovery process. He is also able to transform into a demonic form by removing the three youkai power limiters adorning his ears. In this state his attack power is bolstered and he can use his elongated nails to tear foes to shreds. The vines that twist around his body can be controlled independently and spread long distances to capture and immobilize enemies while he finishes them off.
Hakkai’s strength also lies in his intelligence. He is capable of piecing together information and gaining a larger picture much quicker than the others and is often on par with Sanzo as to what’s going on around them, one of the reasons why he and Sanzo get along well.
Weaknesses: Hakkai’s weakness is his fear of his demonic form and it’s uncontrollable nature. He bears a large distaste, even hate, for his demon persona and will only use it in dire circumstances. When they arise, few as they are, he cannot fully control the beast’s bloodlust and is subject to blackouts where the demon’s cruelty can get out of hand. He is also susceptible to the minus wave, a wave of energy that, in the Saiyuki verse, is turning once peaceful demons into mindless killing animals and does not affect Hakkai because of his power limiters. However, when they must come off, they drive an already turbulent beast into further insanity and spark an uncontrollable anger that is hard to stop. This is another reason Hakkai takes off his limiters rarely.
One of Hakkai’s more played upon weaknesses is that of his attachment to his friends. Because of his past Hakkai does not get close to others easily and only Sanzo, Goku and Gojyo hold the honor. Luckily for Hakkai his friends are exceedingly thick headed and powerful in their own right so it’s rather hard that they will die but the threat is always present and, for a man that has lost so much, it is a powerful threat.

First Person
Dear Sanzo-sama,
It seems I’ve become Alice…and fallen down the rabbit hole.
Haha…I wish I were joking.
There are some rather odd people in this Wonderland, adorned with petite wings that barely flicker, so commonplace and familiar no one gives them a second look. But their eyes are heavy and some of them seem to hunch under the weight. It’s…disconcerting.
Oh, but if you’re wondering…mine are a rather fetching green haha~ &hearts
Don’t cock the gun Sanzo, it’s bad for the digestion. And no, you may not aim it at Gojyo for lack of a target.
Or Goku either.
…My wings and how odd that sounds ...they hurt . I’ve never been able to forget this kind of pain, the type that neither fades with time or hope. But it has never been given a tangible form. After all, scars under your clothing, who could tell you used to look different?
I know I will find no pity from you. Now Goku and Gojyo are your responsibility and with how detrimental you are to yourself, the thought is quite upsetting.
Just remember to eat. Three meals a day Sanzo and a cigarette does not count toward your calorie intake. Priest or no you will not convince me otherwise.
At the danger of sounding dangerously attached…just…survive. All of you. Please. And because I am as stupid as you give me credit for, I will do the same and see just how far this dumb luck of mine takes me.
My it’s chilly…the wind sounds so piercing and shrill, almost like the laughter of the Merciful Goddess.
…Perhaps I am in trouble after all…
Third Person
It was the strange, featherlike stroke of wings against his neck that roused him from sleep and the enigmatic burn between his shoulder blades that kept him awake. His first semi-coherent thought was that it must be Hakuryuu sleeping close, probably as cold and aching as the rest of them ‘poor little Jeep, he must be exhausted. I’ll make us a nice, warm breakfast and when I finish drying the laundry I’ll let him snuggle between the sheets just like he likes to and my goodness, has this bed always been this lumpy? ‘ His next thought, quicker this time (the neurons are working overtime) is that he is sprawled out on the bed, conceivably on Hakuryuu’s side, more conceivably on top of Hakuryuu himself and he couldn’t seem to sit up quick enough, nearly falling back from the sudden rush of blood to his head.
“Hakuryuu! Are you okay? I apologize; I must have rolled over in my sleep and…”
No Hakuryuu but the burn at his back persisted and the sudden spark of a nerve brought about another twitch, against his ear this time, so that there could be no mistake.
“…oh. Well…that changes everything then doesn’t it?”
Hakkai reached for the skin on his forearm, pinched it roughly between his fingers, and waited for the jolt of returning awareness. And waited…waited…waited…hmm. Well, that was the end of that.
“Not a dream then. And I was so looking forward to having a normal day…Gojyo? I’m sorry to interrupt your sleep but it seems we have a bit of a problem on our hands…Gojyo?”
No Gojyo either. The only other bed in the room had starched sheets, untouched and obviously unslept in. And even a man as calm and composed as Hakkai had reason to worry when presented with such alarming facts.
He reached for the bedside table, finding his monocle atop a book he was sure was conspicuously absent the night before. He flipped through it, finding it empty of words or identity and serving no other purpose than to add to the strangeness of it all.
He placed it down quickly, bounding toward the door and down the hallway before he could fully register it. He checked the two rooms over, the ones that should have been for Goku and Sanzo , and found them as empty and impersonal as his own.
He inhaled; seeking the calm he constantly carried around and reminded himself that panicking wasn’t going to solve anything. Perhaps they had gone downstairs to get breakfast and had decided to be considerate and let him sleep longer. They were still recovering after all and Hakkai had stayed up many a night making sure his companions were healing properly.
And if he hadn’t inherently known Sanzo and Gojyo didn’t possess a considerate bone in their bodies the theory would have held merit for longer than five seconds. Still, it was worth a shot.
He rushed down the stairs, calling their names at every landing until he was halfway down the last flight of stairs, nearly colliding with someone. He excused himself and resumed his downward sprint, stopping when he found himself staring into a room filled with half a dozen startled eyes.
And just as many wings.
The silence was thick with awkward tension and Hakkai, for perhaps the first time in his life, spoke without thinking, uttering the first thing that popped into his mind, odd as it was.
“…Pardon me. Did anyone happen to see a priest walk by?”
