I beg to ask - how are the enabled and the enablers faring tonight? Good? Badly? I thought as much.

Or the loud and violent?

Perhaps we all need a civics lesson in how to live together in harmony with our neighbors. Allow me to emphasize, then.

Be. Quiet.

She owes you money? Why is that?

And I hardly think 'charming' is the proper term for her.

A parasol, sold at the usual price.

I'm told I'm not polite enough. I'm trying for your Victorian sensebilities, Cain.

Who do I bill?

I should prefer that you billed Alexis Hargreaves, but you'd wait a lifetime for that repayment.

Fine. Send the bill to me. I'd rather this situation not get any more tedious than it already has.

I meant it was inaccurate. She's hardly charming to me.

Then I'll do both, and get what I need.

She claims to have powers over all spiders. Do you know if that's true?

Very well, then.

I don't know if it's true. She seems able to speak to the spiders she keeps in her basket, the ones she calls her 'friends'. And there have been times it's seemed she's been able to speak to other insects and arachnids, but I don't know if I'd say she has power over them. Why do you ask?

I'm curious as to her power over them. If she can command them, I'm wondering how.

Truly, Cain, spiders and I have an interesting relationship. For someone to command them - I find it disturbing on a certain level.

Perhaps it isn't so much a command as it is a request. She speaks to them and they, out of the goodness of whatever sort of hear a spider has, do as she asks.

Do you indeed? I find it disturbing on many levels and I'd never given spiders very much thought at all.

They're in the abdomen.

Well, perhaps I should experiment more closely ask her.

I see; I had no idea. I could, perhaps, make some remark about the way to a man's heart being though his stomach, but I think that would be impolite.

Yes, and you might be able to get a sensible answer out of her if you ask her. Whenever she sees me all she seems able to do is declare her undying affection for me. Of which I want no part.

How old is she?

I honestly don't know. She wasn't born as real humans are born. She was made from the severed finger of my late cousin and nightmarish medical experiments. I first met her when I dreamed of my cousin and--

She may only be a year old, despite hear appearance. She says she's going to 'grow up' soon, so we can be married.

I know. But such is the nature of those who made her.

Now do you see why I can't stand the sight of her? She's an inhuman copy, an abomination, and she wants me to love her.

You do not have to love her. You do not even have to like her.

But I suspect she is a greater abomination than that.

I don't mean to love her, nor like her. I only wish I could extricate myself from her somehow.

What do you mean?

Telling you that you hate her is not a means, I assume.

I will have to see that myself, and then tell you when I know better.
