wiki. Personality: Yukiteru is probably the character who goes through the most character development in Mirai Nikki. So I will show this development here as well, since it's easier to understand the way he is now when you see where he came from.
At the start of the series, and in all the years before the series, Yukiteru had the attitude of a bystander. He never involved himself with anything or anyone. Whenever the other kids at school would ask him to play with them, he would just turn them down. In fact, he didn't even have any friends, his only friends were the ones that only existed in his mind. (Aka his 'imaginary friends' Deus Ex Machina and Murumuru.) Instead of involving himself with things, he started a 'diary' on his phone in which he recorded everything he saw around him from a bystander's point of view. Not that all of this had any purpose - in fact, Yukiteru himself didn't have any sort of purpose. He tells that he never had direction, he never had a dream nor a goal. At this point in time he is very stand-offish to people. People say that they shouldn't bother asking Yukiteru to go play with them or anything like that, since he's 'hard to get along with'. When someone asks him what's up, he tells him "Same as usual. Just mind your own business, Kousaka."
"I'm just a bystander who's safe from dangers? Hahaha, this is so funny. ... I'm just afraid of being hurt.
Deep inside, I feel very lonely... I really.. want to play with the others as well.
I want to be praised by the teacher when I get the right answer..
Even though I feel sorry for Yuno, I have someone else I like..
'Being a bystander is all I want'.. That's just a lie.."
But soon after he gets involved in the game involving the Future Diaries, he realises that all this time he had just been lying to himself about his wish to be nothing more than a bystander. He actually wants to be involved with things, he wants to join in and have fun with everyone, but he's too scared to do so. He's scared that if he would get involved with things, it would mean getting hurt as well. So he just continued on his own, feeling extremely lonely just to be safe. But it's also at this point that he realises he can't go on like this any longer, and so he starts getting his first development. It's also at this point that his tendency to be self degrading and self pitying kicks in. He says he feels like a failure because he only wrote in his diary rather than reach out to others, and because he used Yuno's feelings for him to survive. ("I can't do a single thing.. It's only natural get killed..") This tendency to indulge in self pity is one of his biggest weaknesses, since it makes him give up easily and sit there and talk or cry about how useless he is instead of standing up and continuing the battle. But it's after this point that he does start involving himself with things, rather than just be a bystander. It's not like he has a choice with the survival game going on with the Future Diaries, either way.
It's then we discover that Yukiteru, above all, is a fairly normal fourteen year old boy. He's constantly surprised and even shocked by the harsh circumstances around him in the game. Yuno, the girl who likes him and his stalker (up to a rather creepy level), constantly manages to freak him out with her yandere kind of behaviour. When she starts talking about killing people for his sake, all he can do it be shocked and reply with "How can you say 'kill' so easily?" That isn't saying that Yukiteru is a completely good guy all the time; when he is cornered into a situation where he needs Yuno to save him so he can survive, he uses her feelings for him to make her protect him. But deep down he knows this is wrong; Yukiteru has a good sense of morality, especially when compared to Yuno who just kills whoever is in Yukiteru's and her way. Another example of this is that he doesn't want to kill Rei, the 5th Diary owner, because he's just a little kid, even though said little kid tried to kill him and Yuno as well. Even though he killed the 3rd and 6th Diary owners before that, he still has a problem with killing and still has some sense of morals.
Because of his previous habit of never getting involved with things, he is still pretty socially awkward though. He never had much interaction with other people other than turning them down, so when he actually has to start interacting with people it goes very awkwardly at first. When he's out on a date with Yuno and they go to the pool, he's too shy and embarassed to even go out in his swimming trunks. He also has a small problem with making some regular conversation - he keeps staring at Yuno's boobs when she's in her swimsuit, but realises he has to actually speak up and talk about something to stop that. And so, in his panic and social awkwardness, he randomly speaks up with "These places often have people who piss in the pool!" and immediately realises how random and awkward and embarassing it is, mentally scolding himself with "WHAT AM I SAYING?!" That he blurts out something like that mostly comes from the fact that he is rather impulsive as well, he's someone who goes by his first instincts a lot. Because of this he wears his heart on his sleeve as well, it's really easy to read his mood. With his open emotions and reactions by instinct, his reactions can sometimes be a bit over the top to a point where it's
comical.
This impulsiveness also leads to him easily feeling complacent and overly confident once things start going right for once. Usually this happens when he feels he can take on anything with his Diary or Yuno, and then he starts feeling so complacent that he leaves his guard down and that exactly gets him into trouble again. It could be said he's perhaps also slightly dense and oblivious to some things; even though he's been observing for so long he isn't the most observant person around. When the fifth keeps staring at him (to see if Yukiteru eats the food he poisoned), Yukiteru just happily wonders if the kid is starting to like him. You could even say that he's a pretty trusting person, he doesn't doubt people or their intentions easily.
"Everyone makes a compromise to live with sorrow and regret!" "That's.. what I hate..!"
Yes, it could even be said Yukiteru is a hopelessly naive and optimistic person (at this point in time, but even later on it's definitely still there, if not a little less apparent). Hinata betrayed him, but he still tells her "Let's make a deal.. If we win, let's all return home together." and he smiles at her. In fact, he keeps trusting a lot of people in the series (the 6th, the 4th, Hinata) and he is betrayed by them over and over again, but he never gives up his faith in people. In the end he even has faith in Yuno, even after she tried to kill him. But it doesn't matter that people betray him, because he still wants to help them out even when they do. (As illustrated in the example with Hinata above.) This is part of the first development he gets in the series - rather than being a bystander like he always was, he gets himself involved with things, involved with people. He starts to want to make friends with the people he meets rather than turning him down, to a point where he even angrily asks Yuno why she's in his way of making friends. He doesn't want to be his old lonely bystander self anymore. And through that it's shown that once Yukiteru does get involved with people and friendly with them, he's actually a very helpful person down to the point of even being self-sacrificing for the people he cares about, even if he doesn't know them too well yet. He is willing to charge right into a fire to save Tsubaki ("I can't just watch her die without trying to save her!"), and he comes out of his safe hiding spot and risks being killed rather than being save to save Yuno. It's remarked that "even if it killed him, Yukiteru-kun only thought of saving everone."
"More importantly, I have to make sure nobody else gets put in danger. This time.. I have to take care of things by myself!"
Through his development he learns how to stand up more for himself rather than just being a bit wimpy and self pitying all the time while hiding behind Yuno as his protector. When Yuno kidnaps him and hurts his friends, he manages to escape with their help. When she asks if he's thinking of leaving her behind and says that she wants to see the stars with him, he just actually downright glares at her and tells her "what the fuck?!"
But his true development comes after the death of his parents. This is when he truly snaps; he gets mad enough to kill the group who murdered his father in rage, even though he was so set against killing before. And so his resolve changes: he wants to be the winner of the survival game with the Diaries so he can become god and revive his parents to save their lives. Because of the change in his revolve, his personality seems to change as well. He becomes more confident and more willing to hurt or kill people for his goals.
"I.. never wanted to kill anyone. But.. But there's no other way.. Then tell me..!! What should I do..!?"
But most of this change is just an outward change, a change in the way he shows himself to others to make it easier for him to win the survival game. Deep down he's still the same person as before; this is for example shown when we discover that his cool and confident speech in front of Deus to the other Diary holders was actually written by Yuno, and from the fact that when he kills people for his goals he does tell them that he's sorry and that he will become god and definitely make everyone happy. He doesn't just want to become god to revive his parents, but he wants to revive everyone who died because of the game. This is the major reason why he's even able to kill those people to start with - he believes he can just revive them when he becomes god and everyone can be happy. He wouldn't be able to just kill them regularly, in fact, when it's revealed that he can't revive people even if he becomes god, he just snaps and has a complete breakdown because of the implications. He already has a slight breakdown in front of the 9th earlier on. He confesses it to her when he cries in front of her; he never really wanted to kill anyone. But there isn't any other way to reach his goal of becoming god and reviving everyone and making them happy.
"I'm no different from Yuno.. Just how many people did I kill for my own sake..!? I.. I may not be able to take full responsibility for my actions.. But..! At the very least..!! I will save you!"
In the end, his selflesness, optimism and self pitying all comes back again. He killed a lot of people for his own sake, for the sake of becoming god, he knows he's been selfish and a failure. He wants to repent for it, but can't do anything in the kind of situation he's stuck in other than saving Yuno, the person he had used all this time, but now realises he truly does love her. (When he's asked for the reason by his parents, he tells them it's for the same reason as he loves them, it's because she was always by his side.) He decides that he loves Yuno, and that he'll definitely save her, even if she tried to kill him just before that. In the end he's even willing to let Yuno kill him so she can live on in the second world as god. ("It's only right that I should die after all the people I've killed.") He just wants her to be happy, even if it costs him his life. But instead of him being killed, Yuno stabs herself.
In the end, Yukiteru is a normal fourteen year old caught up in the wrong circumstances. He's a bit socially awkward, but he wants to try hard all the same to finally make some real friends. He has a tendency to be a bit self pitying, but he's selfless and very self-sacrificing, willing to do anything and constantly aiming to save everyone even if it's an impossible goal. But above all her wants to save Yuno from her sad fate, the girl he loves.
Powers & Abilities: Yukiteru is a regular human; he doesn't have any special powers. The only offensive abiity he's shown to have it that he's fairly good with throwing darts (the regular kind of throwing darts you would use for sport as well) and that he's able to handle a gun, even though the latter isn't something he does very often. He's pretty much just a regular fourteen year old, really.
The true power Yukiteru has lies in his cellphone, which at the same time functions as his 'Future Diary'. A Future Diary is an object (it can come in any kind of shape, Yukiteru's is a cellphone) which tells the future. The screen always displays the things that are right about to happen around him. That is the specific ability of Yukiteru's Diary (also called the Random Diary or No Difference Diary depending on the translation); it's able to give him reports of what will happen in the nearby future around him. And because he's able to tell the direct future like this, he can avoid having it happen. (Like, if it will say a bomb is about to explode right next to him, he could stop the bomb right before it will explode and the future will be changed.) When it's certain that a Diary owner will be killed by another Diary owner, their Diary will give off a 'declaration of death'; it will state 'bad end' and the cause of death. (It is possible to avoid this 'bad end', but if you don't change the present circumstances in that kind of situation you will definitely die in the way the Diary tells you.)
This Diary seems perfect, as if it would be able to get him out of any situation, but there are quite a few downsides about it as well. First of all, if his cell phone would ever be broken in any way, he would immediately die. (This is usually shown as someone changing into a swirl of energy and disappearing.) The specific downside about Yukiteru's Diary is that while it gives a complete description of the things appearing about him, it tells him nothing at all about himself or what happens to him. This is since the Diary functions as if a Yukiteru a little bit ahead in the future is writing down the entries, and while Yukiteru has always observed the surroundings as a bystander he never recorded anything about himself. Another weak spot because a hypothetical future Yukiteru writes the entries is that everything said in the diary is his interpretation of events, so they can be misunderstood. It can say that a corpse is discovered, but it could be convincing fake corpse. But since he believes the corpse is real, the diary doesn't say it's fake. Everything is based on what Yukiteru sees, so it only records things that happen directly around him; he wouldn't know about a murder on the other side of town unless the Diary would say he would see news about the murder on tv.
What items will they be bringing with them to Discedo? The clothes he's wearing, his cellphone/Future Diary and some throwing darts in the back pocket of his pants.
Posting Samples
Third-Person Sample: He wasn't afraid, not even when he almost felt the knife hovering over his back like that. Instead he just smiled a little, a bit gently unlike his usual comic overly eager smiles, as he looked into the girl's eyes.
She almost looked like an animal like that, a small scared animal. And that's what he had finally been able to see in her eyes in the end, rather than just seeing the scary predator, the girl he didn't fully trust and was, to be honest, always a little scared of. But now he had finally found out about everything, now Yukiteru finally knew, he understood. Deep inside she had actually been scared, lonely, and incredibly hurt - and it was his duty to change that. He loved her, and if killing him would make her happy, would give her a chance to be happy at the very least, he wouldn't mind. If one of them would have to go, it would have to be him. He couldn't-- no, he wouldn't sacrifice her, not under any circumstances.
Besides, he deserved that much, right? Under the wrong impression he had killed so many people, thinking he could just revive them later on. But even that sort of thinking had been wrong, it was almost like treating people as disposable. Even so, he knew by now that he wouldn't be able to revive any of them, so their blood was all on his hands for all eternity. He reminds the list he made of people he would have to revive, and almost grimaced a little - by now it was just a list of his shame, a list of the crimes he had committed.
"... Come on, Yuno. Kill me."
His voice was soft, still gentle, almost as if to encourage her. She was still scared, still confused, he could see it in her eyes. But this was the only right solution, and he didn't even find himself really minding it anymore by now.
"I killed so many people.. it's only right for me to be killed. And if you kill me, at least you can go on and be happy, right?" There was a pause, before his smile widened a little. It was still far from his usual more dorky smiles, but it was definitely happy. "I love you, Yuno, so.. this is all I can do to save you. If you kill me, at least you can go on, right?"
She shook her head a little to herself, pulling the knife towards his back, and he closed his eyes in peace.
But when he heard the sound of something being stabbed and didn't feel any sort of pain, he opened his eyes in surprise. And this time his look was far from the complacent one from earlier as he noticed she had stabbed herself rather than him, sacrificing herself for his sake even though he had wanted to be the one to be sacrificed so she could be happy. His eyes widened at the sight of the red blood flowing from her, reaching out with his hands to at least stop it, but of course he couldn't do anything. He couldn't heal a wound like that. Even now, even after all this, was there no way for him to save anyone, save her..?
"Yuno..!"
The display of his cell phone shone faintly in the dark classroom, as he reached out to hold her in his arms.

DEAD END
First-Person Sample: [ When the feed clicks on, there's something clearly like hesitation in the boy's eyes, but.. he quickly forces himself to look more confident, more determined, his look shifting quickly. ]
While I'm still not sure what exactly this place is.. I'm sure it's not the place where someone goes to become god. What, is this some trick of yours, Murumuru? In that case it's not a very funny joke. [ He almost makes an amused sound at that, but.. he can't force himself to do that, not after what happened. Instead he nearly grimaces a little before he continues on. ]
... In that case.. Is this hell, with the ruined buildings? In that case, I would be a whole lot more satisfied. That's where I deserved to go, after all, if.. [ Yuno hadn't sacrificed herself instead. He can't say that, can't finish his sentence. It's too painful. ] But then again, maybe that solitude was supposed to be my hell for all eternity. It does seem pretty fitting for all the crimes I've committed.
[ ... a pause. His look becomes a bit more unsure again. ]
If there's anyone out there.. Please answer this call. If I don't get any message back soon, I should just assume I'm alone here, huh..
