1:17 PM 8/19/07 · Try as I might, I'm not 100% sure which rental I saw the preview for this movie on but it might've been Ju·On 2. Regardless, the preview gave a lot of feeling to both the horror aspects of this movie and it's comedic content. I just finished watching The Host and I've gotta say it's one of the best monster movies I've ever seen.

Also, for whatever distinction it makes...this is only the 2nd Korean horror film I've seen.

A couple things stood out to me in just setting up to watch it. While a Korean film it is default set to English and I'm one of those nuts that likes to watch foreign films in their actual language so long as I've got the option of subtitles. It is also a bit confusing in that the first scene in the lab, if you watch it you'll know what I mean, is actually in English regardless of what langauge specifications you choose. I eventually got it worked out and switched it to Korean with subtitles but it wasn't till I got past the first scene that any of those settings were apparant.

This is a typical monster movie in a lot of ways but it gets you into things pretty quick. The monster effects are amazing, better than I've seen in a lot of Hollywood films. You don't quite get a bead on the creatures habits, whether or not it's playing or predating, initially but it's still a Hell of a ride.

The thing I oddly liked about The Host is the family it largely focuses on are probably the most disfunctional bunch you'll find anywhere outside of the Three Stooges. They're a motely assortment of an Olympic athlete with hesitation and lethargic tendencies, a college dropout, a grandfather who's a tad off and thinks money is the way to solve everything, and a simpleton who's only significant quality is a complete devotion to his daughter. If not for the girl's abduction by the creature no one would think this bunch could ever get along...but her being taken really does form bonds. Not entirely stable ones but still.

The girl is amazing and strong and hard not to love...though a bit of a brat at the outset.

Found it very amusing how the government officials, the police, and all that were more interested in the virus and rounding up the family than actually doing anything about the monster.

You should really check out the director's commentaries in the special features. I normally don't check this option on any movie, never do commentaries during the film, and but this one time I made an exception. If it had been one of those things where you had to watch the movie to get a scene by scene comment I'd've passed. My ranting aside, the comments are just the director apologizing to everybody involved in the film who were either in deleted scenes, you couldn't actually see their faces, or had businesses that needed to be moved for shootings.

I highly recommend you rent this movie as soon as possible!
