Yuletide 2007 recs - part 1

Jan 28, 2008 10:02

I am no where near the end of the list (traditional fairy tales (Fa) are as far as I've gotten so far), but I figured I'd post the stories I've liked the most so far so the links aren't clogging up my "draft" option.

Batman Begins
The Kid from the Narrows
Batman through the eyes of the boy he helps save in the Narrows the night the nightmares started.

Q and A
Wayne Manor burned. There is more to that story, and Vikki Vale wants to tell it.

Chuck
Retail Hell by Megolas
Sarah and Casey have faced down smugglers, rogue agents, arms dealers, and spies - but nothing as scary as working retail.

Chronicles of Narnia
Queen of Morning by Sister Coyote
I'm not entirely sure why I'm posting this one because Ow, is it painful. However, it is also extremely beautiful and well written, very much striking a cord. A tear jerker, to be sure, but worth it in my book. And despite the aches, the ending does quite a bit to keep the story from entirely breaking one's heart. Just chipping at it a little.

Dark Angel
Big Love by LC
Joshua and his pack

Dresden Files (TV)
Needs More Sugar by bigstarmom
Harry, Mai, and Bianca all locked in a dungeon, which pretty much says it all. The story leaves a bunch of loose ends and doesn't exactly have a sastifying ending. Actually, in all honesty, it doesn't really *have* an ending - this being the last sentence: So in the end, I got the sour and the sweet, and I was reminded that you can't always duck the fruit that life throws at you. Hey, a man can get sick of lemonade, and there was one thing I knew for sure: there were more lemons headed my way. But, it's an amusing ride while it lasts, and the wealth of snark almost makes up for the lack of an ending.

Auld Lang Syne by Irena K.
Twelve days before Christmas, Harry gets a very disturbing call. Can't really say more without giving the ending away, but I will say that there are children disappearing and it will take both Harry and Murphy to stop it. And Bob plays decoy very well.

Eureka
Secrets by Xochiquetzl
I haven't even finished read this one yet, but I don't care. Because even if it ends up with Eureka turning into a giant crater ala Sunnydale and everyone dies (which I doubt - it is a town full of geniuses, after all. You'd think they'd have the brains to run away before total implosion), this sentence would make it all worth it.
Jack's house had learned to be human by reading fan fiction. Huh. That probably explained a lot, actually.
If you want a bit more summary, Fargo's computer gets hacked. And he's a huge Willow/Tara fan. Come on, who doesn't want to read that? ;)

Traditional Fairy Tales
The Field Ploughed by silverr
The request was for Beauty and the Beast, The Seven Swans, The Snow Queen, and the Twelve Dancing Princesses. In researching the last one I discovered a gender-inverted version called "Kate Crackernuts" in which a prince is forced to dance to exhaustion each night . and somehow that became the inspiration for this story. I hope that my attempt to blend all four tales is not too monstrous.

Bittersweet by Truth
A bit of a modern version of The Frog Prince, with a twist. "A word of advice, Michael. Don't ever insult a barista at an occult coffee shop."

Dancing in the Moonlight by googlebrat
A retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses story, as told mostly from the point of view from the youngest (named Olivia in this story)

Verity - Bit of a twist on the story of Repunzel.
