On Disney - Old and New

Note: Spoilers for any number of recent and classic Disney films below, which I am not cutting because, yeah, its been a number of years on all the ones included.

Watching Beauty and the Beast, because Emily used her Beauty and the Beast icon and I realized that I hadn't seen the movie in years and decided to change that fact.

Anyway, while watching it, I realized something. Disney has *majorly* cleaned up their movies recently. I mean, just within the last 15 or 20 years, the difference is... pretty obvious once you realize it.

First time I really noticed anything was after the wolf fight with the Beast and Bell arguing - you can *see* Beast's arm all torn up with the claw marks, even if it isn't dripping blood or anything like that. When you compare that little detail with some of the most recent films - like Hercules or even The Lion King; in the later two, while there was a little violence (Hercules got beat up a few times, and Mufasa (sp?) dies, which is just depressing, but when you think about it? No blood. A few scorch marks on Hercules and a motionless Mufasa, but no obvious blood.

And *that* got me thinking about some of the earliest Disney cartoons, like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White - both quite a bit older than Beauty and the Beast. In Sleeping Beauty, while I can't remember any obvious blood, I do remember the Prince in chains, and the Evil Queen actually *says* something like "Not even the fires of Hell could stop me!" just before she turns into that dragon. Snow White I also haven't seen in at least a decade, but it still had the Huntsmen, who I think might've killed and butchered a pig on screen (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - I might be getting my Snow White movies mixed up).

Then that brings us to some of the most recent Disney movies. Lilo and Stich, Atlantis, Home on the Range etc. Little to no violence except of the comedic variety, no gore, just good-time family fun. I remember a tiny bit of red in Mulan, but otherwise, thats the last Disney installment that I recall had anything that might give kids nightmares.

I'm not saying that the newer stuff is bad. On the contrary they're usually a lot of fun. Hey, I pay money to go see them. Especially musicals. YAY musicals! I just noticed how much Disney has changed over the years, and decided to ramble about it. Cause I'm good at rambling.

And, as I am now out of stuff to ramble about, I will shut up now.
