I'm totally with you. I seem to recall there being faint hints even in the 'traditional' gospels that this might be true--and an NPR article I was reading about this today said the same.

It's also very much the spin taken in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, which I love. (I'd highly recommend the 70s movie, though Cristin's more partial to the 2000ish revival version.)
