So I gave that ABC original movie - A Wrinkle in Time - a shot to see how close/far from the original book by Madaline L'Engule (only spelled right) they were... only to realize it has been almost a decade since I read the book and have forgotten pretty much entirely what happens.

I remembered that Meg was the ultimate nerd stereo-type, complete with the braces, glasses, and math genius - except she was so smart that her teachers kinda punished her for being smarter then they were, and therefor she only got average grades (in the movie she was something of a genius, but minus the glasses and the braces. Her teachers still didn't like the fact that she was smarter then they were, though). I remembered that her little 3 year old brother, Charles Wallace, was even more of a genius then she was and had that whole kind of higher brain power thing going on (in the movie he was 6, but still a genius). I remember that Meg's guy friend, who's name I couldn't remember - I thought it was Max or Charlie or something, but it turned out to be Calvin - was kinda an average to below average student who got help from Meg on his math homework at one point and had red hair (in the movie he was one of those all-star basket ball player/in the upper 10 percent of his class type with brown hair). And I remembered Auntie Beast (who I was calling Auntie Monster until the movie was able to correct me... I was close, at least).

I didn't remember a thing about finding Charles and Meg's father, and Miss Whatsit, Miss Who, and Miss Which coulda been entirely new characters for all I remembered - all of which were rather big parts of the movie.

At least I can take comfort in the fact that I think I remembered more then my father did. He only remembered one thing that I didn't remember, and that was the fact that Charles Wallace spent a little time on the 'dark side' before Meg had to save him (though it's been more like 3 to 4 decades since he's read it, so I guess I really can't brag on that end). We've both come to the conclusion that we need to reread the book(s) to refresh our memories, however. :)

Over all, I think the movie was okay... A little over the top with the special effects, and rather poor computer animation. And even with me not being able to remember the majority of what happened in the book, I know they still cut a lot out. But, hey, they always do when it comes to movies. And at least they didn't try to squeeze this 300 page book into an hour and a half to two hours; ABC gave it a running time of 3 hours, plus commercials, so over all they shoulda gotten about two and a half hours of movie, which isn't bad. It isn't really good either, but hey. It's more then they give most books.

And, hey, I think the original Cassie from Stargate SG-1 played Meg, so YAY for that!
AND CHRIS POTTER! Chris Potter (Peter, from Kung Fu the Legend Continues) played the father!!!! ::happy dance/spazz:: He looked really old, but I think that was the make-up... but YAY CHRIS POTTER! ::more happy dancing::
And Calvin was cute (probably still jail bait for my age group, though). He also looked really familiar... ::wanders off to IMDb.com::

Edit - 11:06 pm
Just checked out IMDb.com... turns out the guy who played Calvin is a whole year older then me, so I can lust after him without fear of arrest! ::commences lusting (well, more like drooling... don't think it quite counts as lusting):: And he was in a whole slew of movies I've seen (ashamed as I am to admit it when it comes to a few of them), which is why he looked familiar... So I feel better now. Cause that was bothering me. ::nods nods::

l'engle, books, kung fu, movies - made for tv/b-rated, spoilers
