A book/book series keyword search!!!
For example, say you're looking for a fantasy book with magic and mages and a touch of romance and maybe a sentient sword and gryphons and adventures and maybe a few epic battles between good and evil - but you have no idea if that book even exists, much less what the title or author would be. So, with an advanced search engine tool like they have on FF.net, you punch in all those keywords - and vwala, the search engine directs you to Mercedes Lackey and her Heralds of Valdemar books!
... Or possibly Waterborn by Greg Keys, but it's been at least 15 years since I read that one and I'm not sure if it fits all the details. And yes, in fact, I DID spend twenty minutes doing a Google search with variations of "books + sentient sword + heartstrings" (it's all I could remember about the book itself, so sue me) and a ton of link hopping to try and find the title - something that would've been ten times easier with a keyword search!
