I, like tens of thousands of other Americans right now, am doing the Job Search thing, trying to find something in my field. And I, like tens of thousands of other Americans, *hate* job searching. With the recession (that we are still in, I don't care what BS the politicians are blowing up our ass) and the cuts in funding and thousands of businesses downsizing, spending hours filling out an application that has a 99.99% chance of being a total waste of time is just not my idea of a good way to spend an afternoon, you know?

But still, it needs to be done, and after various failed attempts to scare, bully, and down right demand results from myself, I have finally run across an approach to the Job Search Thing that seems to work for me - I treat it like going to school, and sending out applications is my homework.

It isn't something I *want* to do, by any means, but I need to keep on top of my homework in order to get good grades and graduate with a nice GPA (or, in this case, actually getting a job). My "homework" is to send out at least one application a day Mon-Friday, while weekends I still get off unless I'm falling behind. AND, if I get all my "homework" done early (or, I send out more than one application a day), that means I can fart around and take a break from filling out applications the next day. The method has been working for me quite well the last two weeks or so.

It would seem I have discovered a disadvantage to this particular approach, however. Because one particular skill *all* students learn early on is the art of procrastination.

These are the things I should be doing:
* SENDING OUT MORE APPLICATIONS, or while procrastinating on that:
* Vacuum
* sweep
* maybe mop
* laundry

This is what I'm doing instead:
* reading fic
* checking email and Facebook like every ten minutes
* checking LJ every twenty
* losing at Solitaire when those all get old

Ah, procrastination*. No matter how long we spend apart, I always know that someday we'll be together again.

*I haven't used my 'procrastination' tag since March 2009... which was my last year in college before graduating. Golly, what a coincidence. ;) )
