On dinosaur names and playing in the dirt

I just had a revelation!

In the first Land Before Time cartoon (and the only really good one in my opinion):

Cera is short for TriCERAtop
Ducky is short for DUCKbill
Petrie is short for PETRanodon

The only one that doesn't really fit name-wise is Littlefoot.

Har Har. I R SMRT!

In other news, O HAIIIII PPLE!
Yeah, I've kinda disappeared into a void the last few days. I think this is the longest I've gone without posting without being out of town or without internet access or something. Didn't really *mean* to disappear, I just haven't had much to say.

First off, roommate search is going well. I've gotten a few promising inquires from Roommates.com, and Mandy is also looking around as she bikes to work and stuff. The biggest road block is what I can afford, which automatically kicks out anything more than 400 a month - and even that is stretching it a bit.

Secondly, the internship is going extremely well. We haven't been able to analyze any of the lake sediment samples yet because the proper chemicals hadn't come through. I've been kept busy collecting the samples, though, which involves taking a 1 cc sediment sample every centimeter along the lake core and weighing them to get the wet weight, drying them overnight in a drying oven, and then weighing them again to get the dry weight. After that we put them in a special furnace that can go up to about 1000 degrees C, "burning" them at 550 degrees C to get rid of all the organic material (then doing another weigh) and again at 950 degree C so all thats left is the silica, which gives us an idea of what the sediment consists of. Eventually we'll prepare additional samples so we can count charcoal grains (the objective being to get a basic map of wild fires in the area over the last however many thousands of years, with the assumption being wildfires will be more likely during drought years, and so get a bit of a climate map).

And that about covers it. You all who actually read this didn't miss much. :)

And now I am off to dress as skimpily as possible while still being decent, because the forecast for today suggests temps around 85 with high humidity. Ucky. The only bright spot is it also means a chance of thunderstorms.

land before time, climatology, icky, apartment search, play in the mud, internship
