My aunt asked me the other night if I was interested in going on a cruise to the Western Caribbean with her in December (Florida - Haiti - Jamaica - Grand Cayman - Mexico).
My immediate reaction was Hellz Yeah, because I'm always up for travelling to warm places when it is fricking freezing in Canada. And after a summer of (hopefully) overtime, I should even be able to afford it - even moreso if we /drive/ to Florida, although I can't see that happening.
But anyways. I was looking into the ship this morning - it's Royal Caribbean.....and they say that on a 7-night cruise, there are two Formal nights and one Smart Casual.
Now, what I'm trying to figure out is, is this just if you want to have supper in the main dining room? Or one of the other "fancy" restaurants? I mean, surely they couldn't require you to wear a cocktail dress to go have pub food, right?
By their guidelines, I could probably habitually meet the "Casual" category, if I put my mind to it - it's described as pants or a sundress for women, pants and a collared shirt for men. But Smart Casual is either a pant-suit or dress for ladies, sport jacket and tie for men. And Formal is full-on tuxedo or cocktail dress.
As such, I'd be completely okay with just, you know, skipping the Smart Casual and Formal nights, but does that mean that I'll be confined to my stateroom? We'll not even comment on the gender dichotomy involved here (would they kick and scream if I wore a tux to a formal night?).
am I the only person who thinks it's really, really weird to go on a vacation that requires you to dress up?
