Even If The Morrow Is Barren Of Promises
I made two quick icons that I thought I could do tutorials for. I really like how they turned out and they're really simple. So simple that even the newest beginner could figure them out.
All you need is Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Though I'm sure other Photoshops have it) Tutorial is beneath the cut!
Alright, I'll be going from

Step One: Crop your Base Photo so that its 100x100. You can play with the natural lighting or whatever of it. I just Auto-Colored and it turned out like this:
Step Two: Add your texture layer. I chose this texture (not mine... can't remember who, sorry!) and set it to Screen, 100%.
Step Three: Duplicate your Base image and drag it to the top. Set it to Soft light, 100%. Voila, your first finished product:
However! For those of you who're liking the more muted version of this icon, don't flatten your layers just yet! you've got two more steps to go!
Step Four: Create a new layer and fill it with #9595c5. Then set it to Pin Light 100%.
Step Five: Copy your background once more, drag it to the top, and desaturate (Ctrl+Shift+U). Set it to Pin Light 100% and flatten!
There you go! Genny for you! ^_^
