first day: vet job

Aug 22, 2005 22:42

Sad to say goodbye to the little twins. They will be off to the big world of day care tomorrow. Then I had the longest 6 hour shift I've worked in a long time at the veterinary hospital. I thought I was going to be working in reception (nice and low-key, right?) but after a half hour I got pulled back to the pharmacy/room attendant area where I got lost and overwhelmed by the mounds of medications, patients, and vet demands. At least I was feeling more stimulated than my ole' babysitting job. Right at 8pm (closing time) a lady stumbles in holding her dog in her arms and crying. Plops him down on the exam room table. There is blood coming out of his side. She says a Rottweiler came out of nowhere and attacked her dog. There was nothing we could do for him. I stumbled out the door around 8:10 having not eaten since 1pm and feeling scared and overwhelmed and delirious at the many dramas that I had witnessed all day. Don't know about this vet stuff. I think I'm getting soft.

Now I'm obligated to housesit all week and I'm finding the fear from today lingering in my system as I sit here alone in this big, empty house that is not mine.
