epiphanies

had an epiphany of sorts at faire on saturday.

had a customer in front of me in the middle of purchasing something. 50ish woman with another 50ish woman friend. she looks over across the crowd outside the booth and points at a late-teenish longhaired person and leans over to her friend and asks "is that a guy or a girl?". in a moment of epiphany i say "does it matter" and her eyes get big and she shuts up.

i mean she has never seen this person before, she will probably never see them again, they are in 2 completely different stages of life, would probably never have a conversation, never date, never have sex with them. why does it matter if a complete and total stranger is male or female. why does it matter if a close personal friend is male or female. or a sex partner for that matter. i know what i'm attracted to but have found that even that is not always found on somebody that was born with a penis.

why is it so important to know what gender a stranger in a crowd is?
