She doesn’t remember herself telling them all of it.
She remembers dad shouting, “Who is this bastard?! How dare he touch my daughter?” She remembers Dan turning his back on her and leaving, and she definitely remembers her mother calling out, “You’re only fifteen, Jenny, how could you?”
Yet, she cannot remember herself telling them all of it.
…
They are pointing at her at school.
She finds it funny; kids in her school - the very same ones who drink, take drugs and have sex in limos - think she is naughty. And she laughs, because they don’t understand and haven’t seen any of it.
…
Her dad makes her take a pregnancy test, ignoring her earlier statements when she had told him ‘they’ were safe. But, he’s her father and the only words that repeat in his mind are:
“I slept with an older man.”
And that man could fly.
And that man exploded in the skies above New York; an explosion that illuminated dark streets and left her standing still.
…
“People can’t fly, Jenny,” therapists tell her, trying to make her believe that the impossible can never happen. That is why they call it impossible.
She nods her head absentmindedly. “Yeah, yeah, I know. People can’t fly.”
But, nobody trusts her anymore. They think she had not only made a mistake, but she lost her mind in the process as well. To prove their point, she poses topless for the magazine, and there’s a caption under her photo.
Superman doesn’t care which size your boobs are.
Strangely, dad doesn’t laugh.
…
Her parents send her away to a boarding school for troubled teens, and it seems more ‘out of sight, out of mind’.
…
“How was it for a first time,” ask her new friends.
“Unreal,” she grins.
They find her strange too.
…
She remembers Peter kissing her and feels tears on her face. She never understood why he was needed to sacrifice himself to save New York…to save the world. Selfishly, she wishes he could have just saved himself and her, and they would play the most ancient game in time; a game of two runaway lovers.
He said no.
And then she found herself running towards Time Square, but she knew she was too late. She saw another little blonde standing there, watching him explode into nothingness, and she felt like it was too hard to breath.
…
She never told anyone who he was…not even his name.
But, she told them about what he could do and what he did.
She owes him that at the very least.
…
She lights a candle today.
New York is still standing and the sun will continue to rise each morning because of him.
