*Watari chokes on his coffee*
I'm already dead. I'm in the afterlife.
I have been for the last twenty- seven years. I'm a Shinigami- my job is to make sure dead souls end up where they're supposed to be. I'd rather have to believe in an afterlife, wouldn't I?
Technically, I suppose one could call whatever happens after you exit the cycle the afterlife- after you stop being reborn- but past that point there would be nothing individual left. Souls that have achieved that state are no longer people, not in the sense of having a personality- just enlightened energy, and nothing connecting them to the world any longer.
I think the afterlife is the time you spend in Meifu- whether it's the 48- day minimum, a couple of years, or the working lifetime of a Shinigami. That's as long as you've got as yourself, then you start over as somebody else.
And I'm all for staying me as long as possible. ^_^
