Last fall I started watching 4 of the new series, enjoying them all to one degree or another. The result...
Threshold: Canceled after less than a dozen episodes. This one started out great - in fact it was my favorite of the four - but after that terrific beginning it seemed to lose its way. Despite an intriguing premise and excellent cast, I lost interest shortly before it was canceled. Still, I think if they'd had more faith in the show and given it a full season, it might have been worth sticking with it.
Surface: Canceled after 13 episodes and ending on a nice big fat cliffhanger. While this show was never really good (abysmal writing, directing, and acting), it had its moments. And Nimrod was adorable. And the concept was interesting. And now we'll never know where they might have gone with it.
Invasion: Canceled after 1 full season. This show started out superb and continued to be; in fact it got better and better as the season went on. It starred William Fichtner, for chrissake. "Anything with William Fichtner has to be good," is my motto. The finale is tomorrow, and as there's no way in hell they can finish the storyline that's been playing out all year in one hour, many many questions will be left unanswered and it will probably be a blasted cliffhanger, too. This one really makes me sick, because the show is just so damned good. I wish they'd given it more of a chance to find its audience.
Bones: Finally some good news - this one did quite well and has been renewed. Another excellent show with sharp writing and a quirky, intellligent cast, Bones also improved more and more as the season went on.
But 1 out of 4? Sucks. This coming fall I'm not watching *any* of the new shows, I don't care how good they sound.
