Merest Glimpses: 0506 . The Shrine
For the past couple of weeks, every time Friday comes around, I'm a little surprised to see the episode discussion posts on the comms that I watch. I'm like, "Oh yeah, it is Friday. Again. New episode of SGA, ah."
Likes:
• Jeannie's response to seeing her brother so far gone. Well-played, Kate Hewlett.
• Ronon comforting Jeannie in the hallway. Very unexpected, but nice as well.
• Jennifer being "so taken with the new Rodney" that she doesn't see it as a sign of his illness. We'll all human.
• John and Rodney hanging out on the pier. "Arthur." LOL.
-John's panda sleep shirt and the infamous red plaid shirt he wore over it. XD
• The McKeller stuff. . . I didn't mind so much.
• Ronon being willing to risk his life to save Rodney. I know he's done it before on a team level, but this was more personal, and it was cool to see that.
• Rodney: A Last Supper?
John: Seems fitting, considering your messiah complex.
-Most awesome line ever. Who are we if we can't be real with our friends. :)
• Jen's hair was quite pretty, almost too much so. ;)
Dislikes:
• The general lack of belief when Ronon told them of the Shrine of Talis. That really got on my nerves.
• The brief moment when Rodney became himself again, how he reacted to everyone. That was more of general dislike for McKay's personality rather (though I don't dislike his character overall).
On the fence (eh):
• Woolsey telling about his experience with his father.
• The "I love you," confession to Jennifer.
• Jennifer doubtful believing the effects of the shrine, and her feeling guilty about Rodney's condition. She was willing to think outside the box activating the nanites in Elizabeth Weir's bloodstream to save her. Why was she so skeptical in this case? Just because there wasn't an obvious scientific/medical explanation for how the shrine works. I mean, it was Ronon giving the information. And, like he said, "I never said it was 'magic.'" However, I'll give her the argument that it was a very to allow Rodney to go in his condition.
I would think my Ronon/Keller shippy heart would freak out over something like this, but I tend to be a pretty reasonable person about these things. I mean, basically we're shown that Jennifer and Rodney would work as a couple only if he's about to get over himself and express his true feelings, which seems to only happen when something traumatic happens to Rodney, in this case, his entire team dying in an alternate future or him being infected with an alien parasite that gradually deteriorates his brain function. That kinda sucks, but I see that as telling to the potential for any relationship between them. However, it seems now she'd be more willing to give him a chance. *shrug* As JM said in his blog, The Last Man gave only the "merest glimpses" into the workings of Rodney and Jennifer's relationship.
So, a pretty excellent "character" episode. I would complain about Teyla being more in the background, but Ronon was allowed to shine more, so it was cool. Is this the most lines he's had all season?
I probably would have been more taken with David Hewlett's performance if my video player wasn't stalling as I watched the episode.
Anyway, this seriously screws with my writing muse.
