The Great Escape - interlude

Who can say how long they ran? They had been astonished by their surroundings, of course, and had stared for several moments at the desert where they thought an ocean would be. But great and unseen mechanical workings gnashed and roared behind them, boding nothing well, and so they ran again, over scrub and gravel. They did not attempt conversation, except to shout and point to one another when Lincoln spotted a road.

Now the sun had washed the landscape purple as it set. The temperature fell too. Lincoln would give anything for a drink of water, but there was none to be had. He notices Jordan veering to the right, and it takes him a moment to understand why: a ruin of a structure looms on the other side of the road. Jordan reaches it first, and collapses huddled against a corner.

"Come on," he says weakly. "We have to keep moving." He sinks to his knees himself.
