How did you spend summers when you were a kid?
I loved summer as a kid. My brother and I use to spend most of it at the beach with our friends. Usually my cousins from North Carolina would come up for the summer. My one cousin was right in between my brother and me in age so the three of us were inseparable. Jim, my brother, played little league baseball and because my parents both worked I had to go to every game. It wouldn't have been so bad except his team was always so good that they would be up by 15 points by the 5th inning, and I would get so bored. His team always won and always got to go to the Twins game at the end of the summer. In the summer of 1968 Jim died he was 11, I was 12, he had a malformed heart valve. The doctor that treated him went on to pioneer the artificial heart valve, even though he couldn't save my brother I know others were saved because of his work on Jim. Summers after Jim's death were very lonely, I didn't go to the beach much, I spent most of my time in my room reading and eating junk food. I finally started coming out of my shell when I was 16 and summer again became something I shared with my friends. We'd go to the beach and to the movies. One place we loved to hang out was at Woolworth's store. They had a food counter where we could get the best ice cream sodas in town. I had many happy summers, a few lonely summers and one of the worst summers of my life.
