“You...you’re moving?” I whispered.
She nodded, biting her bottom lip, and tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. “Yeah...”
“But Paisley...why?”
She sighed and looked up at me for the first time since she’s been here. “I’m sorry Ian...I’m so sorry.” she whispered.
“Is that why...you’ve been gone?”
She nodded. “I've been helping my parent’s find a new house.” she confessed. “I’m not staying here.”
I sat there and shook my head. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I spat, clutching the soft fabric of my blanket in my balled up fists. My knuckled were going white but I didn’t care.
“I didn't want you to worry. I found out the day after you went back here.” she said quickly. She reached out for my hand and took it gently, but I didn’t move. I didn’t squeeze her hand back. Nothing. “Ian please...” she whispered.
“Thank you for caring Paisley. But this isn’t okay.” I said roughly, my voice cracking.
“I’ll come visit...when I can.” she mumbled, wiping away a tear that cascaded quickly down her reddening cheeks. “I don’t know when though...”
“Yeah. If my disease doesn’t kill me before you do.” I spat. She paused, and covered her hand over her mouth.
“Please Ian.” she choked. “Be strong. You have Anthony!”
“Yeah. but I won’t have my best friend...” I whispered.
She grabbed her coat and hurried to the door, a small sob escaping her lips as she closed the door, gone. I knew she wouldn’t be coming back.
I could feel the rage building in my chest every passing second. “GOD DAMMIT!” I screamed, flinging my pillow hard at the wall. It flopped lifelessly to the ground with a soft thud.
I stared out the window at the parking lot below, watching her hurry to her car and getting in. She didn’t drive away, she just sat there, her head in her hands, sobbing.
Guilt washed over me. I shouldn’t have been so hard on her, but...how could she not tell me?! I sighed and closed my eyes, leaning my head against my pillow, a sour taste in my mouth. My head was pounding and my heart ached.
“FREAK!”
I was shoved roughly into a locker and winced at the sudden pain in my shoulder. the football team jerk offs laughed bitterly in my ear.
“HEY ASS FUCKS!” a voice yelled. My eyes shot up and saw a girl. She had burgandy hair, and black nerd glasses. A small diamond nose piercing sparkled slightly under the bright school lights. her grey sweatshirt covered her palms, her hands on her hips, a look of anger and disappointment on her face. She clearly couldn’t win against these guys. She was so small...
“Leave him alone.” she said, softer now as every head turned in her direction.
The quarterback eyed her like a piece of meat, laughed coldly and walked over to her. Just as the vice principal came around the corner. The fight ended quicker than it started and everybody ran away.
“Are you okay?” she asked, coming over to me and picking up my binder.
“Yeah...” I mumbled. “Thanks...”
“No problem.” she smiled, placing a small warm hand on my shoulder. Something about her warmed my heart. She was so innocent and nice. She had the purest smile on her face. “I’m Paisley.” she smiled, holding out her hand.
“Ian.” I smiled.
I opened my eyes when I heard someone come in. “Oh...I didn’t mean to wake you...” Anthony whispered.
“Nah. You’re fine...” I sighed, pointing to my pillow. “Can you...”
He handed it to me and my eyes blurred. Stinging almost. “You okay?” Anthony asked gently. He rubbed my back, and another image snapped into my head. The mysterious figure from my dream. I called him Anthony...I tensed up and blushed, wiping my tears quickly.
“Paisley...she’s leaving.” I whispered. “She’s moving.”
“Oh.” Anthony said, sitting next to me on the bed. I don’t know why, but I let it all out.
“Everyone’s leaving me Anthony. Paisley’s leaving. My parents left me that day they died in that car crash, and I’m pretty sure my fucking bag of an aunt doesn’t care if I live or die, so she’s technically left. I’m alone. I’ll always be alone. And I’m surprised you haven’t left yet.” I stumbled, tears flowing freely down my burning cheeks.
“I’m a freak. I’ve always been a freak. Maybe this disease will kill me and I’ll spare myself of this never ending spiral of hell called my life.” I sobbed.
Anthony wrapped his strong arms around me and pulled me into his warm embrace. No. I can’t give into him.
“I’m not gonna leave you...” he whispered, his husky voice in my ear. His soft hair against my cheek, and his warm breath against my skin, smelling of mint from his gum, and the smooth fabric from his leather jacket against my skin.
I melted into his arms, holding him tightly and crying as he rubbed my back. “I’m not going anywhere Ian...” he whispered. “Promise me you won’t leave me.”
I gripped his leather jacket in my fist and looked ahead at the cream colered walls through ym tears, my chest heaving. He still doesn’t know about my disease, and thank god he doesn’t ask questions. I could die any day. But he can never know this...
“I promise.” I mumbled, my voice thick. He nodded and whispered,
“I remember you...”
I pulled back and looked him in his eyes. They held a mischievous look. “That...that party?”
He nodded and smiled, crashing his lips against mine. They held that same feeling. That same intensity, yet soft. The warmth from his slick tongue that entered my mouth cautiously sent my cold heart a flutter. I deepened the kiss, and he smiled against my mouth.
I love him.
I pulled away and pressed my forehead to his, but he tried to kiss me again. “Eager are we?” I smirked. He chuckled and kissed my neck. “I remember when you said that to me...” I breathed, throwing my head back, gripping his hands.
“I remember when you told me not to stop...” he purred, pulling away. “But I must.”
I groaned and held his hand as he stood up. “But...I love you.”
“I love you too Ian. But...I gotta go. I’ll come back.” he smiled, kissing my cold hand and parting ways with me.
The instant he shut the door behind him, a huge smile crossed my lips and I hugged myself. I felt warm again.
