St. Trinian's

OMG, did I ever watch a sillier movie than this one? I think not. LOL St. Trinian's a movie for teens, most definitely, but since I heard so many positive reactions amongst Colin Firth fans I gave it a chance. It's apparently a re-make of an older movie about a girls' boarding school where various groups of girls are in charge, and who instead of learning, undertake all sorts of illegal activities with the headmistress (a drag queen part for Rupert everett) as driving force. They need to deal with the bad financial situation of the school. But then, the minister of education, who likes to present himself as a hard line politician, wants to renew and improve the education of his country. So, he starts his crusade to put things right with the school that has the worst reputation in the country: St. Trinian's. And makes a media spectacle of it... A thing he shouldn't have done.

I won't reveal the plot, it's funny and contains a surprise in the end, but actually one needs to be a Colin Firth fan to really appreciate this movie. Throughout the movie there are references to older Colin Firth movies, a wet shirt scene included. That fact obviously gives the movie an extra dimension for insiders. So, I recognized Hope Springs - his trousers halfway down, Another Country, Trauma - a problem with ants, Shakespeare in Love - the rehearsal of a play, a nasty little dog - Easy Virtue, the wet shirt - as I already mentioned, and - last but not least - Girl With a Pearl Earring - essential to the plot. Perhaps there were more, but I either don't remember or didn't notice.

Anyway, a part like this is perfect for Colin, he was lovely. I was rather disappointed in Rupert Everett. He played a double role, the head mistress (Camilla Fritton... christian name rings a bell?) and her nephew (Carnaby Fritton - after Carnaby Street, a hip street in London in the sixties?). However, this double part that ought to have been absolutely hilarious is done very artificially and just a bit too caricatural to be truly funny. He could have learned a lot from Robin Williams as Mrs Doubtfire or Dustin Hofmann as Tootsie. I was more irritated than amused, anything but impressed. I bet the makers travelled all around the country to find the most gorgeous girls in England. Because they were. Regardless to which group they belonged, geeks, goths or vamps... Their looks make the average teenager dream.

Talulah Riley (Mary in P&P 2005) as Annabelle Fritton was as cute as in P&P, Gemma Arterton (Tess d'Urbervilles) as the smart head girl was cool, and I liked Russell Brand as the stupid gangster, he was hilarious.

I wasn't too keen about the way it's filmed, but it's modern and hip, as is the score.

For those Colin Firth fans who haven't seen it, go see it with your teenage daughter. You'll both have fun. :)
