Ernest Chan proves you don’t have to work for a massive bank or hedge fund to compete in the world of computerised trading. Cutting-edge technology is available to the private trader, who, with the right strategies, can run a profitable algorithmic/quantitative trading business.
Chan completed a PHD in theoretical physics at CornellUniversity, and began his career in 1994 focussed on finding patterns and trends in big reams of data. Those skills naturally translated to the financial markets, and after a stint at IBM Research he worked in statistical arbitrage trading research for the likes of Credit Suisse First Boston, Mapleridge Capital Management and Millennium Partners.
But Chan found the confines of big finance restricting and he branched to trade his own account in 2006. His combination of both private and ‘big-bank’ and ‘big-fund’ experience means Chan is unique in his ability to tell retail traders how to adopt cutting-edge technology and strategies and implement them in a cost-effective manner.
