Billie Piper in something other than Doctor Who...

Feb 26, 2009 23:56

I'm going out of town tomorrow and I still have to go to work in the morning and stay for 8 hours. But what am I doing at 12:30 am on Thursday night? Blogging about British TV and fandom...Will I ever learn?

Over the last three days I have watched both seasons of Secret Diary of a Call Girl starring Billie Piper. I actually really liked it but wow...it was...intense. Billie was not recognizable as Rose at all and actually I never even thought about Rose while watching the show. What did bother me more was seeing some of the men I've seen in the Whoniverse as clients. Specifically Ashok who is played by the man who became Rani's dad on Sarah Jane. But the show was very well written and well played and I really cared about the characters.

It was nice to see Callum Blue in the second season as Alex. I've loved him ever since he appeared as Mason in Dead Like Me. He was brilliant in this part and it was heartbreaking how their story played out. I was really liking their relationship, even though it was based on lies and half truths on Hannah's part. In the end I sided with him. It was a terrible revelation for him finding out what she was and how could he really be with her knowing that she hadn't given up her job.

And Ben, he's so lovable and a perfect best friend. So you find out your best mate is a prostitute, what do you do? He just accepts it. He may not like it and it might worry him but he's able to distinguish between the job and the person. And he loves her dispite it all. He's just brilliant all around. Eventually these two better get together though. Hopefully by the end of the next series, which I was so shocked to read about. I watched the second one fully believing that it was the last.

I hated Bambi at first and thought that maybe they'd just added her as a filler character since Billie was pregnant. But she won me over in episode 6 when she came to the rescue. From then on she showed herself to be a true friend to Hannah, she really cared.

Billie really didn't look all that pregnant in the second series. Yes, towards the end of it you could definitely tell they were using a body double for certain shots and her clothes were a lot looser but overall I think they hid it well. The second series was much more plot driven and there was less flesh all around so I think that helped matters. I feel a bit sorry for her after hearing that the third series started filming just a few months after she gave birth to her son. It's hard enough losing weight without having to worry about being in front of a camera. And I just heard that she battled anorexia as a teenage pop singer. So let's hope she's put that well behind her.

And now for my regularly scheduled vid recs...Secret Diary of a Call Girl vid recs that is.
