i am not ashamed

as clovelad was saying over in runawayvan's post, there are certain people in this world that are ashamed of watching TV. i am not one of those people. i read, i see movies (or films if you'd rather), i have been known to go out in public to do things such as attend concerts or readings. but here's the thing:

TV agrees with me.

it is perfectly suited to the way i live my life and TV on dvds is ohmygod absolutely heaven-sent. see, i'm a bit of a hermit. and i like stories but i just get aggravated with books. i think anna karenina really broke me. my ulnar nerve neuropathy has gotten so bad that i can't read the way i like to anymore (propped up on two pillows lying down in bed with my book up on one pillow on my stomach) because any pressure on my elbows enrages my arms. as a result, i've really become partial to activities where i can put my arms in any position i choose. but i digress.

since i work from home every other week, i've really gotten used to choosing when and how long i do things. my normal routine when i work from home is to roll out of bed at about 9 or 9:15, go straight to the computer, turn it on, work for an hour or two, eat some breakfast, possibly watch an episode of something or other while chowing, work a little longer, maybe shower, work some more, and so on and so forth. it is lovely.

however. what i've been doing for the last three hours is not lovely. at about 5:30 i tried to watch the episode one season finale of weeds. my new favorite show next to veronica mars. well, it wouldn't play. so i looked up the error code and thought all i needed to do was download some codecs and it'd be fine. not so. so i kept scouring the net and eventually found a divx player to download and i tried it again. it worked! i was pleased. felt very internet-savvy.

again, not so much. i get 10 minutes from the end and it messes up. can't see a bit of the last 10 minutes. i think, ok that's alright. i'll just download another version, right? so i download another copy (takes about 20 minutes) and get settled in again only to find....

it's in spanish. i search the internet for an episode summary and nothing is as exhaustive as i need to satisfy my curiosity. i find one page with a video clip... i don't have the plugin and my computer can't figure out what it is. so finally i see that you can download it on itunes! $1.99 to watch 10 minutes of a finale. fine by me. so i click on the download button, enter my credit card account number, log in...

and it says i have to update my software version. THIS TAKES FORTY MINUTES.

now here i am. it's 8:20 and i've upgraded to version 7.0 of itunes and the damn thing keeps stopping in the middle of the download.

books would never shame me like this.
