I don't like it one bit. :(

It's a very impressive map though. The KPBS people are doing a much better job than the latimes people.

The great thing is that this is just one guy who started it, and now is being used by everyone short of OES to monitor the fire.

The LA times map was sorely lacking in burn maps. "So what if the fire started over in X, I need to know if it got to Y yet!"

Yep. I love maps.

I saw someone crediting google for their great fire map, which sort of misses the point.

Do you mean the one from google maps, or the one that shows the fire and smoke on google earth? That one was just fearsome.

It must be surreal to be in orbit right now, being able to see all the smoke going out to see.

They were talking about the Google Maps mashup that someone did, and were crediting google, when they didn't the fire-specific work.

I haven't checked out any of the kmls in Google Earth. URLs?

None on hand... though I believe they are from the "premium" services for google earth, that have the satellite pictures from just the last day or two. They are always linking to them on the major news organizations.

Wait, why not OES?

I thought they would be using their own maps.

I am down if they use google maps, as long as they provide a link to the rest of us!

OES uses the RIMS system that other emergency/response groups in California use, so I assume (or hope) that just about everyone can access the same information. The map I sent you is from OES, the Forest Service, and CalFire.

Ahhhh. I do like the google map, but all the interactive points on it really are slowing down the darn app.

The OES/FS/CalFire map doesn't show every fire, I noticed. But at least we know that Oceanside and more places are on fire, thanks to Mommykins!

I definitely like the KPBS map -- and the LATimes at least gave us info on the area. I wish KPBS would do one for the whole of SoCal. :P

I really like the OES map for showing the resources being used one against the fire.

Agreed. Can't they be convinced to do one for the entire Southern California region?
