Title: The Stranger Next to Me
Pairing: Daejae
Rating: PG
Summary: Out of all the days the train had to get stuck, it had to be on Christmas eve.
aff link “Attention all passengers: due to the snowstorm the trains have temporarily stopped. We are working very hard to get our trains moving again and expect them to be moving again in about 20 minutes. Once again, we appologize for the delay.”
The packed commuters let out another groan. They had already been stranded on the tracks for a good two hours, and it being Christmas eve did not help at all. They all had families to get home to and enjoy a delicious Christmas meal cooked by their loving family. Well, most of them did.
Yoo Youngjae shifted uncomfortably in his hard plastic seat once more. His phone's battery was on it's last shrivel of life and he was just now finding out how awfully drab and out of date his music collection was. His earphones were also really uncomfortable.
“Um, excuse me, but do you have the time?” The man sitting next to him, whom Youngjae had not tried to even give a glance since he sat down next to him a long two stops ago asked.
“It's a quarter past eight.” He replied, glancing at his phone.
“Thanks. Oh, and do you mind if I borrow your phone quickly? Mine died.” The young man asked once more. “My little brother is home alone and I just want to make sure he knows I'm okay.”
“Yeah, of course.” Youngjae took his headphones off and handed the man his phone, who he was now noticing looked surprisingly young. Youngjae's age even. The man was surprised, he hardly ever met business men his age.
“Thank you so much.” The man smiled a rather dazzling smile that Youngjae felt made him seem like a model. His suit fit his body perfectly, and looked rather expensive as well. His fingers glided over the screen as he punched in the number and put the phone to his ear.
“Ah, Junhong? It's Daehyun. Yes, yes, hyung is fine. Don't worry, my train just got delayed due to the storm and my phone ran out of battery. Hm? Yeah, hopefully I should be home in an hour. Have you eaten yet? Eat if you get hungry then, you don't need to wait for me. I'll see you then, okay? If it gets too late go to bed. Hyung loves you!” Daehyun smiled before hanging up and handing Youngjae back his phone. “Thanks a lot.”
“Uhm, no problem.” Youngjae flinched a little when Daehyun's fingers brushed against his hand. “Is your brother okay?”
“Junhong? He's fine. He was a little worried but suspected the train had gotten stuck. He's a smart kid.”
“Oh, how old is he?”
“Fifteen. I've been taking care of him since our parents died last year.”
“Oh...I'm so sorry.” Youngjae gulped a little at the awkward response.
Daehyun smiled and shook his head, “Don't worry about it. Junhong is a strong kid. Way taller then me, but strong. I'm Jung Daehyun by the way.” He held out his hand.
“Yoo Youngjae. Nice to meet you.” He shook Daehyun's outstretched hand.
“Nice to meet you as well, Youngjae. How old are you? If you don't mind me asking, you look quite young.”
“I'm twenty three.” Youngjae responded, quickly checking his phone to see if he had gotten any new messages. He hadn't.
“Really?” Daehyun's eyes opened a little in shock, “Me too! What do you know.” He sounded excited.
“Wow.” Youngjae's eyes mimicked Daehyun's, “That is something.” He laughed.
“So, do you have any family?” Daehyun's tone of voice sounded more casual after finding out they were the same age.
“Just my parents and older brother.”
“Older brother? How cool. I always wanted an older brother when I was younger. But instead I became one.” He laughed. “How's your brother? Is he cool?”
Youngjae sighed and shook his head with a smile, “Super cool. Honestly, I'm not kidding. He can get girls to fall for him with the drop of a hat. I envy him a lot sometimes. It's like all of my parent's attractive genes got wasted on him and left none for me. He's super sweet too.”
Daehyun pat him on the back, “Aw, cheer up. If it means anything, I think you're plenty attractive. And your brother must take care of you a lot too.”
Youngjae felt a shade of pink fill his cheeks, “Really? And yeah, he actually took great care of me when I was younger.”
“Yeah! Don't worry. I'm sure one day you'll find a beautiful woman who will just be utterly in love with you and you'll get married and she'll be the best wife ever. I mean, if you don't have one already.”
“No, no. No girlfriend right now. I just guess girls aren't that attracted to me. You must have one though. You're a pretty handsome guy.”
“Thanks but I'm the same as you. I have a lot of female friends but none of them really appeal to me. It's just I don't swing that way, you know?”
Youngjae's mouth formed an 'o' shape, he knew. He exactly knew.
“Oh crap.” Daehyun broke the silence that had just formed between them. “I didn't mean to make things awkward by telling you I was gay, it just came out...Um, sorry.” Daehyun sat back up in his chair and starred forward, twiddling with his thumbs.
“No, no, it's okay. I actually...I actually understand you. I'm the same as you.” He responded quietly.
Daehyun turned back towards him, “Really?! You're gay?!” He said a little too loudly, causing some commuters to give the two dirty looks.
Youngjae blushed in embarrassment towards Daehyun's actions. “Umm...yeah.”
Daehyun pat his back again, “Two same aged business men who both like men. Would you look at that? Are you sure we aren't long lost twins or something?”
Youngjae smiled at Daehyun's straightforwardness and outgoing attitude. It was a trait he never really found attractive in people, but for some reason he didn't mind it with Daehyun. “Well unless all the attractive genes went to you again, then no. I don't think we are.”
“Damn. I was really hoping to finally have another brother.”
Youngjae snapped his fingers in mock disappointment, “Me too. But then again, that would mean I would have two super handsome brothers, and I don't think I could live with that.”
Daehyun rolled his eyes. “You're plenty handsome, Youngjae. I honestly don't understand why some attractive people keep saying they're ugly. They're not. Your appearance is fine Youngjae, don't worry.”
“You really mean it?”
“I wouldn't be making such a big deal about it if I didn't mean it.”
“Thanks.” Youngjae smiled, “Thanks a lot, really. Nobody has ever said that to me.”
Daehyun gave him another model perfect smile, “Don't worry about it. So do you have any plans for Christmas?”
“I'm just spending it with Junhong. I already wrapped his presents and stuff, and he's cooking a nice dinner. We were supposed to have dinner tonight but I think it'll be cold by the time I get home...”
“That's a shame.”
“Yeah, it sure is. But knowing Junhong, he's probably doing his best to keep it warm and hasn't eaten yet. Sometimes he's too good, you know?”
Youngjae nodded, “My brother was like that too. He always bought me food and made sure I had enough to eat all the time. I think he overfed me as a kid. That's probably why I still have baby fat.” He patted his cheeks.
“Aw, I think your baby fat is cute.” Daehyun's finger sunk in the other's left cheek. “So squishy.”
He brushed the other's finger away in annoyance, “Stop that.”
“Sorry, sorry. So, do you have any plans for Christmas?” He asked, not sounding sorry for his actions at all.
“Nope. I mean, my brother is out of town and I don't think he'll get back until after Christmas.”
“Really? Hey, why don't you spend Christmas with m-”
The monotone male voice droned over the speakers again. “Attention all passengers, we are moving now. We are moving now. We should reach our next stop in two minutes.”
The train was soon engulfed in cheers as the train lurched forward.
“Oh my god, thank god.” Youngjae sighed, “My stop is next. When's yours?”
“The one after your's actually.” Daehyun shrugged, “It was nice talking to you...”
“Same, Daehyun. Um...do you have a business card? So I can contact you?”
“Y-Yeah!” Daehyun responded, rather cheerfully. He dove into his bag and nervously began to shuffle among his scattered papers for a business card. “H-Here!” He politely handed it to Youngjae.
“Thanks! Here's mine.”
“Thank you.” Daehyun made a small bow but was interrupted by the blaring of Youngjae's phone.
“Hello? Hyung?! Yeah, yeah! Really? Yeah, for sure! Mmhhm. Okay, five then. I'll see you tomorrow! Yeah, don't worry, don't worry. I'm getting enough to eat...okay, okay. Bye!” Youngjae hung up with a large grin on his face. “That was my older brother. He just arrived home and is inviting me over for dinner tomorrow!”
“Really? That's great!” Daehyun sounded a little disappointed, but tried to mask it under the sound of the train pulling into it's stop.
“Well this is my stop, I'll see you around.” Youngjae collected his things and rose from his seat.
“Wait!”
“Hm?”
“If you don't mind...I wanted to ask you this before but now you have plans for Christmas...Um, well, why don't you come over to my house right now for dinner? Junhong always cooks too much food and we both haven't eaten yet-”
Youngjae pecked Daehyun on the cheek and sat back down, “I'd love to come over. And as a thank you gift, why don't you guys come over and spend Christmas with my brother and I?”
Flustered, and finally silent, Daehyun nodded.
