First impression - Haha, Perky little sunspot, isn’t she? I wonder if she ever shuts up.
Fact One - How Remy came to be: Remy never knew her father, but her mother was very open with her about him, so she often refers to him as Papa Kirkland, Daddy K, or some variation of the name. Her mother was a native of the Tortola (Or, as native as one can get, since the original inhabitants of the islands were basically wiped out) Who had a short fling with Henry Kirkland, who, surprise, surprise, got her pregnant, but was long gone before the child he fathered was born. When Remy was very young, her mother married an American Naval officer, who’d been stationed in the VI’s. (When Remy talks about her “dad” she means Tomkins; she rarely calls him her ‘step-dad’ or ‘adopted dad’). With a military dad, she’s traveled a bit in her life (even spending her early teens in the US) but they always came back to the islands at every possible opportunity.
Fact Two - Remy is an Uber-nerd, 4.0 student, who mentally corrects people’s grammar when they talk, and will go to ridiculous lengths to avoid ending a sentence with a preposition. Education was always highly emphasized in her home and in the community. She graduated from the International Baccalaureate Programme in high school. She considers the whole world her neighbors, partly because of the International flavor of her education, and partly because of the varied European forces that fought for ownership of the island, and the assorted Pirates that used the Islands for smuggling and other illegal activities. Because of this part of her history, Rhema observes International Talk like a Pirate Day (September 19th) almost religiously. This generally includes cosplay and Sea Shanties she learned when she was young.
Fact Three - Remy absolutely adores her big brothers. She wishes she could have spent more time with them when they were all children. She’s used to families being tight-knit groups, and it upsets her that her new-found family is so disjointed and hostile toward one another.
Fact Four - Rem is an extremely affectionate person. Once she gets to know you, she will hug you every time she sees you. She’s basically a huge snuggle-bunny with little to no personal bubble, hugs and kisses abound, and she is often found falling asleep on someone’s shoulder or lap during long movies and boring conversations. She is also very friendly; strangers are just friends who haven’t told her their names yet, and she can be shockingly loyal to people she’s only known for a week.
Fact Five - Rem loves the Ocean and aquatic sports; she can sail, surf, boogie board, you name it. Living on a tiny island, it’s basically a given. She can spot a tourist a mile away. She has discovered upon moving to Liberty that she absolutely hates winter. She came here from the Tropics, man! Somebody crank up the thermostat! She hates being cold, and it amplifies the snuggle-bug aspect of her personality. She doesn’t care if you’re not on a hugging basis, it’s freezing!! She’s rarely seen without a giant coat in the winter time, and will climb into someone else’s coat with them if she knows they’ll let her.
Fact Six - Remy is a very religious person. She’s been brought up in an almost entirely Christian community, and values her beliefs very highly. She’s not embarrassed to say that she attends church every Sunday, and occasionally sings gospel music (loudly, and with much enthusiasm, the way it’s supposed to be sung) when nothing else is going on, seemingly for no other reason than to entertain herself. She also prays often. Sentences that seem to begin with just mild exclamations like ‘Oh, lord’ or ‘father in Heaven’ are actually her way of casually communicating with God. It’s not disrespectful in any way, simply her long-held belief that a higher power is near, and has love for the people of Earth.
Fact Seven - Remy is a music fanatic, and she loves to sing, whether it’s an aria at a voice recital, singing along with the radio in the car, or belting a show-tune while walking down the street just for the funny looks. She’s been in church and school choirs as long as she can remember (and longer. She has no recollection of that concert her mother videotaped where she was the only one in the preschool group to remember all the words to ‘This Little Light of Mine.’). She’s played in a few casual Fungi bands around her neighborhood in her youth, and is a fair hand at keyboards and Calabash percussion.
She appreciates nearly all musical genres, but of course, there’s a special place in her heart for Fungi, the music of the Islands. And Jazz. And Broadway. And Oldies. And just about everything else.
Fact Eight - Remy can get terribly lonely, living here all by herself in Liberty. She’s used to having her entire family close-by. At home, she had her parents, grandmother, aunts and uncles to look up to, and cousins and stepsiblings running around underfoot. (Or, at the most, down the street.) She’s a social creature, and although in the midst of all that ‘family love,’ she often wished for a few moments to herself, she’s really not built for solitude. She’s taken to ‘adopting’ people, as sort of a substitute for her real family.
Fact Nine - Remy was raised to be very polite - especially to her elders. She refers to people she considers ‘adults’ (as opposed to ‘college kids’ and younger) as Mr. Mrs. Or Miss, and calls them sir or ma’am when speaking to them. If she’s familiar enough with the person, she’ll drop the titles, but it can take a while to get to that point.
She can seem a bit uptight and formal at a first meeting, but when she warms up to you, she’s very caring. If you’re ever greeted with ‘everything safe?’ and of course, a big hug, you’ll know you’re in the buddy circle.
Fact Ten - Slight drawback to loving humanity as a whole: trusting humanity as a whole. Remy believes that all people are good, and it can get her into trouble. She can be very naive and gullible, and refuses to understand that some people do things just to be mean and cause trouble. She knows there are 'bad people,' or at least dangerous people, who'll take advantage of others' kindness, but the nice man/lady she's speaking to couldn't possibly be one of them.
As you'd guess, she can be taken advantage of fairly easily.
So, all the lovely anonymous people have given me wonderful suggestions, and yes, I listened.
These are the new facts so far. I'd welcome any suggestions or comments that could make her better. I realize she still needs a secret. (Her old one was kind of dumb, I think). So, if there's anything anybody really wanted to see from a BVI character, feel free to suggest here, or on the HYD page, and I'll take them into consideration and see what works.
