I've half expected this community to explode ;) after we finally get that what we've been waiting for years: Gambit in the X-Men film.
I didn't expected the film to be too faithful to the comics and indeed it wasn't. Almost nothing of Gambit background was present. Even his Cajun origin is not obvious, can't figure out of his accent. Well, I'm not an expert, but it sounded just like the Southern accent rather than a thick Cajun's way of speaking. And yet, looking at him from the first moment I could say: it is Gambit. I enjoyed every single scene with him, dissapointed only by their shortness.
My favorite scene is the 'Gambit introduction' with the card trick. It looked so cool I can watch it all the time. Also the red eyes effect was quite nicely done. Wonder how black eyes with red pupils would look but seems that it might be just too awkward. Special effects are not enough. A drawing looks totally different than real eyes. At least he had his coat. Not a brown trenchcoat but a black leather but I think it looks great.
The 'magic stick' seemed to have a bit exaggerated features but it made his powers more splendid (okay, they could spare that helicopter moment and climbing up the walls). Wolverine really deserved to be blown up in the air after he hit him! Gambit starts his solemnity statment and then *punch*! That was not funny at all!
I liked Taylor Kitsch in the part of Gambit. He looks much more like Ultimate Gambit than the hero from the general comic timeline. I accept that. He had to be younger here to fit to the chronology (and yet he turned out to be too old and Xavier refused him to give him a lift; so mean of him!)
What I didn't like was that he had only few scenes! Really, couldn't he go with Wolverine on the Island? No, it would be too much for fans, wouldn't it? He had probably need time to go made himself a new staff ;)
Was it worth waiting for film Gambit? I think the answer is yes.
Even if his part was reduced to take-me-to-the-Island/check-what-happened-with-the-children/bring-me-a-sandwich ;)
And your thoughts on film!Gambit?
