Title: Choices
Pairing: Lucas/Peyton
Fandom: One Tree Hill
Rating: PG
Summary: How I think Lucas and Lindsey's wedding should have gone
Author's Notes: Cos it's Lucas/Peyton.

He was here yet again, the place that held so many memories, both the good and the bad. The River court. The familiar pavement, no matter how beaten brought some comfort to the man stood directly in the centre, hands folded into his pockets, coat buttoned up securely in an attempt to keep warm in the cold weather. Closing his eyes he let out a sigh, before withdrawing his hand from his pocket, a ring nestled in his open hand. A ring that only hours ago had taken pride of place on his bride to be’s hand.

Yet in typical Tree Hill Fashion something had gone wrong, he had been unable to utter the words I do. He would forever remember to look of hurt that flickered across the face of Lindsey, followed by the sheer outrage when he explained why he couldn’t marry her. There was still a dull throbbing in his left cheek, where her hand had collided with his face; something that Lucas thought was fairly mild compared to what he deserved. Yet it had to be done, and Lucas could only wish that he had come to his senses earlier and spared her the embarrassment of telling her at the wedding.

He did have every intention of seeing the wedding through, of marrying Lindsey, but that would neither be fair to her, or to himself. She deserved somebody who would lover her, not somebody who was in short, using her as a substitute in a vain attempt to get over the one girl he knew he never would, like an alcoholic uses alcohol to forget. Yes Lindsey defiantly deserved more than that.

Peyton Sawyer would always have his heart, no matter how many times he tried to take it back. It was only now he realised that he could only ever be truly happy with Peyton, whether they were married or not. He had also come to realise that Peyton was right; he had asked her to marry him out of some stupid insecurity, and some need to reassure himself that they weren’t drifting apart. It was a good thing she turned him down, he realised, and both of them were not ready for marriage. Lucas especially.

There were some things in life that once broken would never be repaired. His relationship with Peyton was not one of these things, and while he still had the chance, he would take it, and he would damn well make sure he didn’t mess it up this time. After all Lucas once wrote that they were destined to be together, and he had never believed that sentence more than he did now. They were destined to be together, and Lucas was going to make sure of that.
