"The heart will break, but broken live on." - Lord Byron

The room looked like it was spinning. Dazed, Remus rubbed the back of his head where a lump was already forming thanks to the way his skull had bounced against the wall.

"I'm going out for an hour and when I get back I don't want to see a single fucking sign that you were ever here," a voice snarled at him. "Fucking filthy, disgusting animal." Remus' head jerked back and hit the wall again as a thick glob of spit hit his cheek, just below his eye.

The front door slammed. He only had an hour but nevertheless Remus didn't move yet. Filthy, disgusting animal... The words echoed in his mind, the voice that he'd once found so comforting, that had told him how perfect he was, that had promised to love him always, growing louder until the volume made his eyes sting with the threat of tears.

Yes, the volume. That was what made him feel like crying. That was all. Just the loudness, not the words. Because Remus knew, had always known, that love was just a cruel illusion and broken hearts could survive.

They had to.
