"Prompt": Intro/Description of where he goes AU

My name is Remus Lupin. I was born in the spring of 1960 and I lived a happy, normal life (for a wizard) until a couple of months after my seventh birthday. That's when I was bitten by a werewolf by the name of Fenrir Greyback. From there on out, life got much more difficult. I spent a great deal of time in hospitals and even when I wasn't tucked away under the careful watch of healers, my mother kept me indoors. I grew up quiet, bookish, rather self-pitying, overly concerned with what people thought of me and terrified of myself.

When I was eleven years old, I was accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. My parents, along with help from my grandmother, had been teaching me at home for years and were prepared to continue doing so; nobody thought I would be allowed to go to school with normal children. At first they decided that I couldn't, but Albus Dumbledore made a personal house call and discussed all the precautions that would be taken to ensure I and my fellow students would be perfectly safe and I could get the best education available. Finally, my parents relented and I was allowed to go.

At Hogwarts I was sorted into Gryffindor, the house noted for its courage. I'm still quite certain this was a mistake; I've never seen myself as being particularly brave. Anyway, I was still too concerned with keeping a low profile so people didn't discover what I was but the three boys I shared a dorm with simply wouldn't leave me alone. They tried to include me in everything they did and eventually I started giving in. Before I knew it, I had friends. Real friends, I soon discovered, when they found out that I'm a werewolf and, instead of shunning me and hating me like most people, they stuck by me. They kept my secret and they looked after me and they treated me like someone who really mattered to them.

After school, we still stuck together, fighting against Lord Voldemort and his followers as part of the Order of the Phoenix. The horrible mess that came of that left me friendless and rather lost. I didn't feel I could go back home so I drifted for years, struggling to make ends meet and to keep myself alive. Life was difficult but I managed. When Albus Dumbledore contacted me and offered me a teaching job, I thought perhaps my troubles were over. Alas, that only lasted a year and then I was publicly outed as a werewolf and I resigned my position.

A second war against Voldemort was mounting by this time. The following year, it was practically in full swing. The Order of the Phoenix regrouped and recruited new members and even though I was still penniless and jobless, things became a little easier for me. I had a few friends again, and Order members have always been quick to take care of each other, even if the person being taken care of would really prefer to be left to their own devices.

Over the next several years, the war intensified. I was kept busy with research and missions for the Order. At the height of it all, I married my fellow Order member, Nymphadora Tonks. My Dora... She's so stubborn. It took her ages to convince me to even give her a chance. I still think I'm too old, broken, dangerous and poor for her. I still have trouble seeing myself as anything but a burden to her. But she refused to give up and so eventually I did. It may not have been the best timing but we had a son, Teddy, who was born the spring after we were married. In all my life, I'd never so much as allowed myself to dream that I'd be a father but even if I had dreamed, I could never have guessed how wonderful it is.

Just a few short months after Teddy was born, the war came to a head. The battle took place at Hogwarts. Losses were heavy on both sides but we were victorious. Voldemort was defeated. In the middle of the fight, I was distracted and none other than Fenrir Greyback managed to knock my wand away from me and we engaged in hand-to-hand combat. (I may look shabby and undernourished but a werewolf should never be underestimated.) I won the fight, escaping with more than a few new scars that will never heal but also with my life. Greyback can't say the same.
