(( For those of you in prehpsixwords, caretomoondance is this Remus, just younger. So I'm tossing this ficlet up here as well as in his journal because ... I can! :D ))
"Oooh, here's the snack cart; do you want anything, Remus?" Lily asked.
Remus just shook his head and murmured a soft, "Thanks, anyway." He'd been craving Every Flavour Beans all summer, actually, but he really wanted to get out of this compartment and back to James and Pete and Sirius. He promised them he'd be back as soon as he could. Lily was insistent and persuasive, though, and after the Prefects' meeting and a little prowling the train together, Lily had shunted him into her compartment with her and her friends and now he was surrounded by several girls, most of whom he thought were ridiculous and giggly.
Lily was nice, though. And Alice.
As they crowded the snack cart, Remus picked absently at his robes. The longer he took getting back to his own compartment, the more questions James would have about Lily. What had she done with her hair? What was she wearing? Did she say anything about him? What did they talk about? Did Remus put in a good word?
He rubbed at his forehead. Maybe this would be the year James stopped making a complete prat out of himself and actually got Lily's attention. Positive attention for a change, instead of negative. Of course, he'd still have to get her to talk to him in the first place and who knew how long she could ignore him. Lily Evans was nothing if not strong-willed.
Suddenly Remus spotted Lily's trunk and inspiration hit. If something ... personal ... happened to disappear from it, Lily was very likely to automatically suspect James. Even if James stayed clear of her compartment all day and there was no real evidence that it had been him, Lily would suspect. After all, James had ways of doing some really outrageous things without getting caught. Maybe she'd confront him about it and then James could turn the conversation to something that'd make him seem a little more charming. Maybe he could even offer to try and find the thief.
He glanced over at the girls around the cart. Nobody was paying him any mind at all. Moving quickly and silently, Remus unlocked Lily's trunk and rummaged around carefully so nothing else was out of place. When he withdrew his hand, a pair of knickers came with it and were hastily hidden in his robes. By the time the girls joined him again, offering chocolate, Remus was back in his seat and looking innocent as ever.
