Chapter 8

Draco woke sometime during the night, unsure of the time, but it didn't really matter. The bedroom door was cracked open and the soft light from a lamp in the hall filtered through. The beam, falling across Remus' face, gave Draco the perfect view of his sleeping lover and the wash of love he felt for the werewolf was almost overwhelming.

Remus was exhausted. He was recovering from the transformation the night before, which also happened to be the thing that pushed back Draco's returning to St. Mungo's to visit with Harry.

Draco didn't mind so much, Remus' health was far more important, as was his happiness. Draco was sated, feeling a bit agitated though he was unsure why, but being so near Remus was keeping him calmer.

Draco shifted just a little, careful not to wake the exhausted man beside him, and he turned to face Remus. Splaying his hand on Remus' chest, palm down, Draco could feel the rapid heartbeat beneath his fingers and a sudden thought struck him, leaving him in a state of awe.

This beats for me.

Pressing a gentle kiss to the centre of Remus' chest, Draco snuggled down into his pillow and let the thought that he was loved and safe carry him off into a deep and restful sleep.

Entering the Ministry building, Remus prepared himself for another long day. Thankfully it was Thursday, meaning one more day until he could enjoy a lazy weekend with Draco, after seeing Harry and Severus. The whole idea of Draco wandering into the place he'd escaped from still worried Remus, but he could not bring himself to tell Draco no.

Exiting the lift on his floor, Remus started towards his office but stopped when a hand fell on his shoulder. The smell was familiar, that of the Minister for Magic and Remus groaned inwardly.

Outwardly, Remus smiled and turned to face the Minister. "Morning, sir, how are you?"

"Well enough," Duncan said, though there was something strangely tense in his tone. "Might I have a word, Lupin?"

"Well I am awfully busy this morning, loads of contracts that still need to be gone through..." Remus said lamely.

"Won't take more than a moment," Duncan said, and with that, he pulled Remus into an empty office. Closing the door firmly, the Minister stepped away from Remus and crossed his arms. "My new head Auror has just informed me that you've switched flats," he started carefully.

Remus frowned. "You're new head Auror," he said, addressing that topic first. "I thought Ron Weasley..."

"Yes well," Duncan said, interrupting Remus, "I'm afraid Weasley's focus has strayed from his assigned tasks and he's been poking about where he doesn't belong. Can't have that, now can we?" Malice coloured Duncan's tone and Remus shivered inwardly.

"He's been relieved of his position, then?"

Duncan chuckled. "He's not been sacked, Lupin, just... demoted."

Remus nodded and then cleared his throat. "And you've had me followed?"

The Minister laughed and leant against the side of the wall. "Not followed, Remus. Actually I had a form for you to look over and I sent Andrews over to deliver it and he found your flat empty."

"You sent the head Auror to my flat to deliver a contract?" Remus asked with raised brows. "Surely he has better and more important tasks to accomplish."

Duncan's face reddened slightly. "He offered to help me with this task, it was unexpected, that contract. No matter, I had it taken care of. But I did wonder why you hadn't seen fit to inform anyone that you were leaving your home."

Remus did some quick thinking before giving his answer. "I've been in contact with Harry Potter recently, sir, and he's asked me to look after his home in London whilst he's recovering. I eventually decided I didn't need my flat so I moved permanently."

"Four years after the battle, you did this?" Duncan asked suspiciously.

Remus shrugged and nodded. "Aparently the person who was caring for it, couldn't do so any longer. Harry is like family to me and I don't mind doing him a favour when he needs it."

"Indeed well... perhaps I should confirm that with Potter."

Remus gave a half-shrug and smiled. "Oh please do. I'm sure he'd be happy to see you."

Duncan's jaw clenched tightly and when he spoke, it was through his teeth. "I do suggest you learn from Weasley's mistakes and mind your place, Lupin."

"I always take care to mind my place, sir," Remus said a little harshly. "Now, if you don't mind, I have work to do."

With that, Remus turned and walked out of the room, head swimming and a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.

Several hours later, Remus found himself in the middle of a contract between the Northern Romanian Vampire Clan when Ron Weasley marched into his office.

Flopping into a chair, Ron launched into the tale of his demotion. "I can't believe he did that," Ron hissed. "The only reason I'm here right now is because the ponce is off on some business."

Remus sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I don't know what to say, Ron. Perhaps all of this is just going a little too far."

Ron shook his head firmly. "You don't understand, Remus. There are so many things that remain hidden and so many things have been covered up since Duncan took office. I know Hermione is dead-set on un-covering what's going on and a few of the old crowd are in on it as well. Actually, from what Kinglsey has said, there's been some new information un-covered and he plans on letting us now at the old flat."

Smiling at the use of the Order codes, Remus nodded. "Owl me," he said. "I need to pay Harry a visit and I know I will have a lot to contend with at home."

Ron leant across the desk and gave Remus' shoulder a squeeze. "Tell him it'll work out," and with that, Ron left.

With a nervous breath, Remus quickly finished up his work and headed out of the office. Heading down the hall, Remus only stopped when he felt a hand fall on his shoulder. "Oy, Lupin." It was the voice of the newly appointed head Auror, Jack Andrews.

Remus turned and smiled. "Hello, Andrews. What can I do for you?"

"Just wondering why you were leaving early. Not making this a habit, are you?" Whilst the tone was light, there was a hint of threat underneath.

Remus forced the painful smile to remain on his face. "Just a bit of follow up on my Vampire Clan contract, plus I'm off to say hello to Harry before I return home."

"Well... alright then," Andrews said with a small sigh. "Just don't keep it up."

Fighting the urge to roll his eyes, Remus turned and left the building, Apparating to St. Mungo's. Remus headed up to Harry's floor and found Harry's door closed tightly. Knocking softly, he waited impatiently for someone to open it.

It took Severus a few minutes, but eventually he let Remus inside, guiding him to the chair beside Harry's bed.

Before Remus could open his mouth, Severus started in. "Mind telling me why the Minister for Magic was poking round in here today, Lupin?" The tone had a slight sneer to it, but Remus recognised it as Severus' worried voice.

"I'm afraid I've come under suspicion by speaking with Ron," Remus said, and then launched into an explanation of the situation with Ron's post as an Auror.

"Bast'rds," Harry spat angrily. "Th..ey kn'w."

"They do," Remus confirmed with a sigh. "They might not know exactly what's going on, or that Draco is somehow involved, but they've caught Ron poking round the old records and obviously something is still traceable."

Severus sighed and crossed his arms. "They asked if you were staying at Grimmauld Place."

Remus' eyes widened. "They know about Grimmauld Place?"

Severus snorted and shook his head. "Of course not, Lupin. But they asked if you were staying at Harry's home, and obviously that's Grimmauld Place."

"And?" Remus pressed.

"We t'ld... th...em ye...s," Harry confirmed.

"We both reckoned you told them that for some reason," Severus put in, "and we didn't want to make things worse."

"I did tell them that," Remus confirmed. "Duncan's had my flat surveyed and they learnt I was not living there any longer. I had to give them some excuse."

"I do...n't m'nd," Harry said, reaching out his good hand and grasping Remus' arm.

Remus groped around until he found Harry's shoulder and squeezed it. "I can't stay long, but I did want to warn you about... about all that's coming to a head. I don't want to cause more trouble for you..."

"N't," Harry said firmly. "Ne...cess'ry tr'ble."

"Indeed," Severus confirmed. "We'd had enough of the corruption when Fudge was in office and we're not about to endure it again."

Remus quickly said his good byes and decided to head back to his home. Racing to the alley, Remus Apparated away, landing just in the foyer of his home.

Strangely enough, though, Remus felt a pull as he landed, something he'd not experienced before. Taking a moment to check himself over for spells and the like, he chalked it up to nervousness when he found nothing.

When he walked into the parlour, Remus found Draco curled up in front of the fire, having a kip on the floor. Kneeling down by Draco's side, Remus slowly brushed his fingers through the blonde's soft locks until Draco slowly woke.

With a yawn and a stretch, Draco sat up and languidly embraced his lover, placing soft but sloppy kisses all along Remus' cheeks. "You're early again," he said with a smile.

Remus chuckled and pulled the shadow-seer from his neck. "I missed you and... "

"And?" Draco pressed, hearing the tension in Remus' voice.

"And more bad news," Remus confessed before launching into the tale. When he was finished, Remus sat with his back against the couch and Draco situated himself in Remus' lap. Resting his head in the crook of Remus' neck, the blonde breathed in his lover's scent.

"Maybe we should just... stop," he said with a slight shrug.

"We can stop," Remus said un-easily, "but no one else will. They're all determined to un-cover what's been going on and I don't think there's anything we can do to stop them."

"Maybe..." Draco said, losing himself in his thoughts. "Maybe I can talk to Severus when I see him on Saturday."

"You're still set on this plan?" Remus asked with a sigh.

Draco chuckled and pressed his palm to Remus' chest. "Yes, and you can't dissuade me from my decision. What can they do, Remus? Lock me up? It won't matter, they can't keep me if I'm not insane."

Remus turned his head down and captured Draco in a deep kiss. "I know," he said when he pulled away, "I just can't help but worry."

Draco found no need to say anything more, however, as the kiss drew them into something much deeper, right there on the floor in front of the fire.

Friday, Remus decided to refrain from speaking with Ron. He concentrated on his work fully, attending a conference with several members of different tribes and managing to secure three treaties. When teatime had arrived, Remus intended on spending it alone, however, that was not to be.

Just as he sat back to relax with his warm cuppa, his office door opened and the Minister for Magic strode in. "Lupin, am I interrupting?"

Remus sighed inwardly and shook his head. "Of course not, just having a cuppa. Fancy one, sir?"

"No, thank you, I was just dropping by to ask you a question."

"Indeed, and what might that be?" Remus asked, trying to keep his voice free of sarcasm.

"Well the most interesting thing happened, Lupin," Duncan said as he leant forward, his hands on the back of Remus other office chair. "You see, when Andrews met you in the corridor yesterday, he placed a tracking charm on you. After you left St. Mungo's, you Apparated away and the tracking charm was rejected from your person. It's most curious, as it seemed that you Apparated right off the planet. Care to explain."

"Perhaps you'd be willing to enlighten me as to why you felt the need to track me," Remus said heatedly.

"Just precautions, old man, no need to feel insecure. I just like to check up on my men every now and then."

Remus sighed and set down his teacup. "Harry Potter's home is warded, un-plottable and heavily guarded for many reasons. It can't be traced and the secret keeper is now dead so that's why a tracking charm wouldn't work."

Duncan raised a suspicious eyebrow. "Indeed, well glad I cleared that up then," but his tone was far from pleased. "Take care, Remus. I wouldn't want you to get caught in the middle of something wholly un-pleasant."

"Is that a threat?" Remus asked angrily.

"Not a threat... a warning," Duncan said, and left without another word.

With a wary feeling, Remus finished out the rest of the day.

"Oh fuck," Draco hissed as Remus' tongue probed his tight hole. He never thought that much pleasure was possible. Tears streamed from his eyes and he was convinced he would die if Remus didn't stop, yet he was sure he would die if Remus did.

Eventually, the hot tongue was replaced by two slick fingers and Remus lowered his mouth on Draco's, letting the blonde taste himself on Remus' tongue. Draco groaned with pleasure as the relentless digits pounded against his prostate. His rock-hard prick sat against his stomach, wholly neglected but wouldn't remain so for long.

As Remus slicked up his own prick, he rolled Draco onto his stomach and positioned himself at Draco's hole. "More?" he asked, teasing the blonde slightly.

"Ohgodfuckyes," Draco hissed, pressing back against Remus.

The werewolf stilled Draco's hips, moving into Draco at an agonisingly slow pace. The blonde groaned and tried to move but Remus kept him firmly in place. "Not until I say so," Remus hissed, nipping lightly at Draco's shoulder.

On his hands and knees, Draco bent his head down and squeezed his eyes shut as waves of pleasure shot through him. Remus knew the exact angle, and his short thrusts hit the sweet spot every time. Fisting the bed sheets, Draco let out a stream of curses as Remus slowly pounded into him.

"Fucking hell, Remus, harder!" he shouted in his pleasurable frustration.

Remus chuckled and wrapped one hand round Draco's waist. "Harder?" he asked in a strained voice. Remus was almost desperate for a wickedly rough shag, and he felt Draco's need for one, in their bond, as well.

"Fuck me, Remus," Draco groaned. "Don't go easy on me, hurt me."

At those words, Remus growled deep in his throat and began to pound into Draco, caring only for keeping himself at the proper angle. Draco pushed back fiercely with every thrust, his cock now leaking onto the bed. With heavy panting, Remus felt his climax building and he reached down to fist Draco's prick with a fierce abandon.

With just a mere three strokes on his cock, Draco shot his load and cried out as the orgasm ripped through him. Clenching the muscles in his arse around Remus' thick cock, he felt Remus' thrusts become more shallow, and Remus' fingers dug into the skin on his back, as the older man came inside of him.

With laboured breaths, Remus pulled out of Draco and the two of them collapsed against the pillows, both resting against each other. Eventually, Remus leant down and kissed the top of Draco's sweaty locks.

"I love you, Draco, so much."

Draco chuckled and traced a pattern across Remus' chest. "I love you, Remus, more than I ever thought possible. No matter what, Remy... I will always be okay so long as you are near me."

Remus carded his fingers through Draco's hair and thought that Draco just might be right. He didn't say it aloud, but the gesture was enough for Draco, as it always was.

Morning came, bringing the sun over the bright snow on the Siberian landscape. Draco blinked against the harsh light and turned away from the window. Remus was still sleeping, his chest rhythmically rising and falling. Draco could see the vein in Remus' neck pulsing gently and his mouth twitched just slightly in his sleep. Draco leant up on his elbow and watched as Remus, deep in dream land, brought his hand up to itch a spot just below his eye and then turn slightly to the side, letting out a soft sigh.

Draco wondered when watching such small, insignificant gestures became his favourite thing, when it became so mesmerising to simply watch his beloved sleep.

He didn't think on it much longer, as Remus soon stirred and his mind rose to consciousness. His sightless eyes blinked open and he scrubbed the sleep out of them with the heels of his palms. With a great yawn, Remus groped to the side until he found Draco and pulled the blonde close to his chest.

"How long have you been up?" Remus asked, his voice still thick with sleep.

"A while, I love watching you like that," Draco said as he snuggled into Remus' arms.

Remus ran his fingers down Draco's cheek, trailing them across the blonde's lips. Draco let out a hot breath, and Remus shivered as it ghosted over his hand. Wrapping his fingers around the back of Draco's neck, he pulled the younger man in for a deep kiss.

Pulling back, Remus feathered kisses down Draco's neck and across his collar bone. "Love you," he whispered against Draco's skin.

Draco arched his back and he felt his cock stir between his legs. "Merlin, I won't ever want for anything sexually with your stamina, Remy."

Remus threw his head back and laughed loudly as he pulled Draco on top of him. Postitioning their cocks together, Remus fisted them both as Draco's mouth devoured his own. Remus' moans were muffled by Draco's probing tongue and with just a few strokes, both men tipped over the edge, their come coating each other's chests and stomachs.

With a sated sigh, Draco rolled away and fumbled for something to clean them. Using his old t-shirt, he wiped the sticky come away and then snuggled next to Remus. "Breakfast?" Draco asked. "I'm craving something sweet."

"I figured you might be," Remus said with a grin. "Why don't you go run your bath and I'll ready the breakfast. If you're still intent on this hospital visit, I'd rather it be earlier rather than later. Besides, I have plans for afters, tonight."

Draco smiled wickedly and kissed Remus' palm. "Afters indeed, you're insatiable! One would think you were the man in his early twenties."

"One would think," Remus repeated with a grin before rising and groping for his dressing gown. After toeing on his slippers, Remus made his way to the kitchen where he quickly readied a plate of pains au chocolat and a steamy pot of chocolate for their breakfast. Just as he finished pouring Draco's cup, the blonde sauntered into the kitchen, dressed in simple, black robes.

Draco's hair was loose, falling a bit into his eyes and un-dried. He brushed a lock out of his face before wrapping his arms round Remus from behind, pressing a kiss to the older man's neck. "Smells delicious."

Remus smiled and leant his head back on Draco's shoulder, giving the blonde full access to his neck. "Mmm, so do you."

Draco chuckled before kissing Remus full on the mouth. He released the hold on his lover and quickly took a seat at the table, biting straight into one of the warm, sweet pastries. "Thanks love," Draco said through a mouthful.

Remus laughed and shook his head as he sat down to sip on his chocolate. After a few moments of enjoying their breakfast in companionable silence, Remus put his cup down and leant on his elbow. "Draco... are you sure you're ready for this? And I don't just mean ready to face the world again, or whatever you want to call it. I mean, are you sure you want to risk your freedom just to see Harry?"

A small frown creased Draco's forehead, making him look rather boyish, though this was lost on the blind man. "It won't be risking my freedom, Remus, because they have no grounds on which to keep me. I'm not un-able to care for myself, now."

For some reason, Remus couldn't put that thought out of his mind. However, the lycanthrope had no proper argument for his fear so he let it go... for the moment. Standing up, Remus pressed a kiss to Draco's temple. "I'm going to clean up and dress. When I'm finished, we can go."

Draco kissed Remus' hand before Remus turned and walked back up the stairs to the bathroom. After a quick shower, Remus dressed in his usual black attire and then, as a second thought, Remus grabbed the pendants that Severus had given him. Slipping his round his neck, he carried the other in his pocket, fully intent on making Draco wear it.

When he got to the bottom of the stairs, he suddenly felt himself pushed against the wall, a hot mouth devouring his. It only took a breath before Remus responded in earnest, bringing his hands around Draco's waist, pulling him tighter. Remus' tongue probed Draco's mouth gently as Draco's fingers twinned in Remus' slightly damp locks.

Finally desperate for breath, Remus ended the kiss, leaning his forehead on Draco's. "What was that for?" he asked softly.

"Nerves," Draco answered a little sheepishly. "I guess... I mean you are right, I am nervous about this and I might not end up being ready for the visit."

Remus brought his hand up and cupped Draco's cheek. "I'm going to be right beside you, and if you need to get out of there quickly, use this," he said and pressed the pendant into Draco's hand. "I have mine on and if anything goes wrong, we can get out of there quickly."

Draco slipped the chain round his neck and then pulled on his winter cloak. Drawing the hood up over his head, he took Remus' arm and allowed the older man to Apparate them to the hospital.

Draco felt a momentary wave of panic settle over him when they landed in the lobby of the hospital. The smells and sounds of the building brought back a rush of memory that startled the younger man and he quickly clung to Remus' arm.

"You okay love?" Remus whispered.

Draco pulled his hood up further, hiding his face and he gave a feeble nod. "I... I'm fine. Let's go."

Feeling a bit skeptical about Draco's reaction, Remus took the blonde's arm and they headed into the lift. Riding to Harry's private floor, Remus led the way where their magical signatures were scanned to make sure both were allowed access to Harry's rooms.

Remus blessed Severus and Harry for remembering, when Draco gained clearance, and together, the couple made their way down the hall.

"This is his room, Draco," Remus said as he stopped in front of the door.

"Let's just go in," Draco said, anxiety colouring his tone.

Remus took a deep breath and pushed the door open. He walked in first, Draco trailing behind him and clinging to his hand much like a child.

Severus was seated in a chair next to Harry's bed, his feet propped up on the mattress and Harry was sitting upright, obviously engaged in conversation with his lover. The pair looked up when Remus and Draco entered and Harry's eyes widened.

"Oh," he said softly.

Severus was immediately on his feet and he approached the couple that had just entered. "You made it," he said softly. "Harry and I were unsure if the two of you would actually come this weekend. We had the wards modified to accept Draco's signature just in case, though."

"I appreciate that," Remus said, and pulled Draco closer to him.

Draco's eyes looked round the room, at everything except Harry. He didn't know what he would think once he laid eyes on his former school enemy and he was frightened of the emotions that Harry might produce. Eventually he looked up at Severus and attempted a shy smile. "Hello," he said, barely above a whisper.

"Draco," Severus said and grasped the blonde's shoulder by way of greeting. "You look nervous."

Draco shrugged and clung tighter to Remus' hand. "A bit." Taking a deep breath, he knew he had to face Harry eventually. Trailing his eyes over to the bed, Draco took in the sight.

Harry was older looking than he had been last time they'd been face to face. There was a new scar, though it was different than the one he was famous for. His hair was a bit longer, though it was still as unruly as ever. His eyes were the same though, bright green and shining with curiosity and intelligence. He was thin, but fuller than he would've been had Draco seen him a year before, and now, with his therapy, Harry could move his head, his eyes and the entire left side of his face. The movements in the left side of his hand were gaining strength every day, though they were still very sluggish.

Harry raised his right hand in greeting and inclined his head towards the blonde. Draco felt a wave of panic wash over him and he looked down at his hand that was firmly clasped in Remus'. Taking a deep breath, Draco released his grip on his lover and walked over to Harry's bed.

"Po... Har-Harry," he said, fumbling for a name. Potter sounded wrong now, but Harry seemed too personal, and he blushed a little.

"H'llo," Harry said carefully, his eyebrow quirked at the blonde's very different attitude.

"I er... I wanted to say thank you, for what you've done to help us... Remus and me. I... well with our track record, I guess I didn't deserve it, but I was hoping we might... might..." Draco trailed off and shrugged, feeling a bit of an idiot.

Harry frowned just slightly, and then ever so slowly, he raised his right hand. It was a repeated offer of friendship, one that had once been revoked, and now he was presenting it again.

Draco felt the memory surface and he couldn't suppress the small smile that formed on his lips. "Don't want to go making friends with the wrong sort," Draco whispered as he took Harry's hand in his.

Harry's eyes lit up and a smile broke over his face. "I c'n... h'lp you th're," he said slowly.

Draco's smile widened and he allowed a small chuckle to escape him before dropping Harry's hand. He suddenly felt Remus' strong arms wrap round him from behind and Draco let out a slow breath, leaning into his lover gently. "I... thanks," he said lamely.

"Any...t'me," Harry said with a slight nod.

Severus, who couldn't suppress his smile either, quickly brought two chairs for the new couple to sit in. Once Remus and Draco had taken their seats, the conversation went from pleasantries to the situation at hand. Of course Severus had no new insights at the moment, but he knew a few people that might be able to help. They spoke for over an hour about their plans and what Ron was looking into before Draco declared that he was ready to go back home.

"I don't mean to cut it short but... well this was hard for me," Draco said softly.

Severus leant forward and grasped Draco's shoulder gently. "I'm so proud of you, Draco. There will be plenty of time for many more chats in the future. Just take care of yourself, and all will be well."

Draco nodded and stood up, Remus quickly following suit. The couple quickly said their good byes before heading for the door. When they opened it, however, they weren't expecting what happened next.

Draco, unprepared, plowed right into Jack Andrews, who was standing with his wand at the ready. A shouted Stupify sent a bolt of red light straight into Draco's chest and Remus groped out for his fallen lover.

The two Aurors that were standing behind Andrews strode forward and hauled the unconscious Draco to his feet. Lost in the blackness and confusion, Remus groped for the wall to orient himself. He felt a sudden presence as Severus stormed forward to take his arm.

"What the bloody hell?" Severus demanded angrily.

"Draco Malfoy is under arrest," Andrews sneered.

"What for?" Severus snarled, and Remus was grateful, he couldn't seem to find his voice and every fibre of his being ached to touch his lover.

"He is accused of participating in Death Eater activities, covering up illegal acts performed by one Lucius Malfoy and above all, serving under the rule of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named."

"Proof," Severus hissed. "There is no proof."

"There is plenty, however you do not need to be shown the proof. He will have a trial, which only family members will be allowed to attend and his status will be available on public record in fifteen days time. Good day gents," and with that, the three Aurors Apparated away, Draco in tow.

Remus' knees suddenly gave way and he felt Severus supporting him, dragging him to a chair. Desperately trying not to hyperventilate, Remus took slow, shallow breaths and focused on the hand holding his. It felt different than Severus' and Remus realised that it was Harry.

"Draco," Remus finally whispered. "They... they took him."

"Wh't do.... we.... do?" Harry asked, looking back at his lover.

Severus, who sat on Remus' other side, was ashen faced and he looked down at what he was holding. It was the pendant, the one Draco had been wearing, and when Draco fell, the clasp had come un-done. "I... I don't know," Severus whispered, and it seemed in that moment, no one did.
