People in bookstores

May 17, 2006 18:22

Some people in bookstores are careful not to "break in" the book. They hold it open just enough to read comfortably without riskig the newness of a book. They are respectful of other people who will read it or actually buy it. Other people bend the covers so that they lay flat on the table. They hold the book up and stop just short of bending the front cover all the way to touch the back cover. When they are done with it, have sucked out the marrow of its fresh qualities, they leave it on a table, on a chair, or on the wrong bookshelf. The spine is broekn in and now wears white crease marks, never to return to its perfect status.
