In the Dark (Easier Forgotten Remix)

Ray Vecchio closed the door to the apartment where Fraser was sleeping naked in the July heat.

In the hallway, he resisted the urge to adjust his clothes - too easy to interpret by curious neighbors; bad enough that he was slinking out at this hour.

Thankfully, the Vecchio house was silent. He walked softly through the dark to the bathroom where he took a lukewarm shower. He scrubbed himself down looking up into the glare of the ceiling lamp, white and blinding through the spray of water.

Cleaned and cooled, he felt better. There was a Mafioso movie on television, good enough to keep his mind occupied before he had to sign in for his night shift. He settled in on the couch, determined not to think.

He woke up with a jolt. Some time had passed. The lights and TV were off. The ever-pervasive sound of their old air conditioner was gone; the air was hot and humid.

Ray was slick with sweat underneath his clothes. He had been dreaming about Fraser. The room was pitch black, and all he could see was Fraser naked, spread out; turned on and tensely waiting. Half dream and half memory.

He pressed his fingers against his closed eyes, willing the images away.

It took him some time to realize that they were having a power outage, and then he was fumbling through the house to get ready for work, still sleep-dazed and shaky.

He was immediately dispatched to the UIMC hospital, where the emergency generator had started up as planned. The clean, brightly lit corridors made it easier to forget his dream.

When Fraser radioed in, asking if he needed assistance, he was able to keep his voice cool and professional.
