Kate and Andrew Had Two Daddies (The Kids' Remix)
... That in itself was nothing. Princess Ayshani, who had come through the Stargate for the birthday party, had three daddies, two mommies and a spirit guide. But Katie’s dads were weird. For her party they’d insisted on balloons and lame party hats, and her present from John had been sent in with the Daedalus and was a set of two robots that could be assembled into a space ship. That didn’t fly.
“Is that all?” Princess Ayshani asked loudly among the kids sitting around Katie, watching her work, “For my last birthday I got the Darotian crown jewels and a moon named after me.”
Her daddies had told Katie not to be rude to Ayshani, because they didn’t want war with the Darotians, so Katie kept her mouth shut and kept on working on the robots.
Her daddy Rodney came into the room with Andy on his hip.
“Hey Katie, why won’t you let Andrew play with the...”
He trailed off as he saw her sitting in the mess of dismantled robot limbs and scraps of electronic devices and wiring that she’d gotten from her tool box.
“I’m fixing it,” she explained. “Andy can play with it when I’m done.”
“... Fixing it?”
“It’s a space ship, but it didn’t fly. So I’m making it fly,” she explained patiently.
Katie knew that half smile meant that her dad was proud of her, even though he knew he wasn’t supposed to be.
“Fair enough,” Rodney said and took Andy with him back into the kitchen, where John was preparing her birthday cake.
